ADAM E. BITTNER, city school tax receiver, was born in Lowhill Township, Lehigh County, Pa., June 24, 1863, the son of Lewis and Amanda (Bittner) Bittner. He was educated in the district schools and early began work in his father's machine shop. He then clerked in the general store of C. W. Haas, at Lyon Valley, for three years, after which he came to Allentwon and worked in Koch Brothers' shoe store. At eighteen, he and his brother-in-law, George Dressler, purchased the old Kramer grocery at Sixth and Hamilton Streets. Six years later the partnership was dissolved, Mr. Bittner continuing in the same line of business at 214 North Fifth Street. He was elected a county commissioner in 1905, and re-elected in 1908. He was an excellent official, and many improvements were made during his incumbency. He has been treasurer of the Bittner slate Company since 1901; was treasurer of the Retail Merchants' Association for twelve years; has been trustee of the Lehigh Saengerbund since 1896; was president of the Board of Prison Inspectors for two years, and in 1911 was appointed by the court as adjuster to close up the affairs of the Allentown Mercantile Company. He is now serving his thrid term as city school tax collector. He is a Republican and actively interested in all community affairs. He is a member of the following organizations; Washington Camp, P.O.S. of A.; I.O.O.F.; Royal Arcanum, and St. Michael's Lutheran Church. On april 18, 1886, he married Addie, daughter of Phaon and Lucy Rabenold, of Allentown.
