H. W. DODD, Ph. B., A. M., superintendent of the Allentown public schools, is a typical self-made man and a credit to the community wherein he resides. Born of poor parents in Jackfield, England, he worked his way through school until today he ranks high as an educaator throughout the East. He was born November 14, 1879, in Jackfield, England, a son of Andrew and Emma (Lloyd) Dodd. He was six months of age when he came to America with his parents and was reared in Winconisco, Dauphin County, Pa. He attended the public schools, and after teaching in the rural district schools for two years, entered teh Millersville State Normal School, whence he graduated in 1901. Mr. Dodd then taught for four years, and in 1905 entered Yale University, being graduated in 1908. While at the university, Mr. Dodd earned his tuition and livelihood by teaching a night school. He received teh degree of Ph. B., from Yale, and in 1914 had the degree of A. M. conferred on him by Columbia University, where he pursued post-graduate work. From 1908 to 1911, Mr. Dodd was supervising principal of the Lykens public schools, and the following three years he was superintendent of schools at Columbia, Pa. From 1914 to 1916, he controlled the destinies of the schools at Mahanoy City, and during the summer of 1916 he was elected to the position of superintendent of schools of the city of Allentown, succeeding the late F. D. Raub. Thus far Professor Dodd has proven himself an able and efficient executive, and his work in the schools has already shown signs of bearing fruit. He is esteemed by all who know him, and is an able public speaker. In 1908 Professor Dodd married M. Louise Hallbaver, of New Haven, Conn.
