HERBERT W. ELVIDGE, general secretary of the Allentown Y. M. C. A., was born December 29, 1869, in Germantown, Philadelphia. H was the son of Herbert W. and Christiana (Dalzell) Elvidge. After being educated in the public schools, he became connected in clerical capacities with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He began his life work on September 15, 1893, as assistant secretary of the Germantown Y. M. C. A. In 1902 he became general secretary of the Allentown Y. M. C. A. Two years later he resigned his position, and in 1915 became connected with the state committee of special Y. M. C. A. Buildings Fund Campaign. In 1906-07-08 he was general secretary of teh Warren, Pa., Y. M. C. A., and on July 1, 1909, he returned to Allentown as head of the local institution. His work here has been of the highest caliber, and he is truly one of Allentown's representative citizens. In 1915 he conducted teh $120,000 campaign for his institution. This money was used to erect a modern building, which will be completed during the fall of 1917. Mr. Elvidge, by reason of his work, has been anactive factor in teh social, civic and religious life of the community. He has seen service with the N. G. P., having been captain of Co. M, Second Regiment, in Philadelphia. Mr. Elvidge became a member of the Guards in 1891 as a private, and until 1906, when he resigned, had filled every office in his company. He is a member of teh Jordan Lodge of Masons, and active in the work of the First Presbyterian Church. On September 25, 1894, he married Anna Akroyd, of Philadelphia. |
