WILLIAM A. GOTTHARDT, alderman of the Fifth Ward, is the son of John H. and Alavesta Gotthardt. He was born in Chambersburg, Pa., January 1885, and when but one year of age came with his parents to this city, where he was reared. Early in life he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Tilghman Keck, the latter being his father's sister, and since a mere toddler has claimed the Fifth Ward as his home. His grandparents, upon their emigration to this country from Germany, at once settled and lived in that section of the city. He is the oldest of twelve children. He was educated in the public schools and was graduated from the Allentown Business College. After having been employed as stenographer and bookkeeper by several local business corporations, he entered the real estate and insurance business. He is an influential Democrat and in the fall of 1913 was elected alderman of the Fifth Ward, assuming the duties of the office, January 5, 1914. He holds the distinction of being the youngest alderman in the State of Pennsylvania. His administration to date has been one of justice and integrity. On January 2, 1904, he married Ella M. Krauss, daughter of William F. Krauss, of New Tripoli. He is a member of the Lehigh Democratic Club; I. O. O. F.; K. G. R.; O. K. of F.; and the Jordan Lodge and Chapter of Masons.
