"HON. CLINTON A. GROMAN, president judge of the courts of Lehigh County, the oldest son of James E. and Sophia (Sterner) Groman was born March 23, 1861, in Salisbury Township, Lehigh County. He received his education in the district schools, the Millersville State Normal School, and the Allentown Preparatory School, after which he taught in the public schools for six terms in Lehigh County. While teaching he followed the prescribed course of legal studies in the law offices of Henninger & Dewalt, at Allentown, and was admitted to practice as an attorney-at-law on December 21, 1885. Shortly afterward he went to Kansas City, Mo., for the purpose of practicing law there, and was admitted to the bar, but after two years he returned to Allentown, and successfully continued his profession here until he was elevated to the bench as president judge. In 1898 he received the nomination for district attorney of Lehigh County on the Democratic ticket, and was elected. He served the office with distinction during the years 1899, 1900 and 1901. He was recognized for his fairness to criminals, though as public prosecutor he performed his whole duty with signal ability. In the judicial election of 1913, three candidates presented themselves to the voters of the county, each of whom was eminently fitted in character and intellect for the high office. Mr. Groman received more than fifty per cent of the total vote cast at the primaries, and was therefore elected without the necessity of being a candidate at the ensuing general election. Judge Groman, who has the judicial temperament, coupled with native ability and common sense, has steadily shown marked development since he has been on the bench. He is an assiduous student of the law in all its branches, and a man of high ideals. In the administration of justice he shows neither fear nor favor, and enjoys the confidence alike of the members of the bar and all his fellow citizens. |
