J. HERBERT KOHLER, superintendent of the department of public safety in the city council of Allentown, is the son of Dr. John P. and Emma (Balliet) Kohler, and was born at Egypt, Pa., April 14, 1865. In his youth he removed with his parents to Allentown, where he has since resided. He was educated in the public schools, Blackman’s Business College, Muhlenberg College and Peirce’s Commercial School, Philadelphia. He then became a clerk in Trexler & Hartzell’s bookstore for two years, after which he was employed as a bookkeeper by Fichter & Martin, ribbon manufacturers, at Bethlehem, Pa., with whom he remained twenty-one years. He was elected register of wills in 1908, serving to July 1, 1910, when he was appointed postmaster of Allentown. Following the expiration of his term of office he was engaged in the insurance business until 1915, when he was elected to city council, serving as superintendent of public safety. Mr. Kohler is a Republican in politics and very popular socially. He is a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and the following fraternal and social organizations: Greenleaf Lodge, F. and £ M.; Caldwell Consistory; Lulu Shrine; B. P. 0. E. No. 130; F. 0. E., Aerie 110; Knights of Maccabees; Woodmen of the World; Sons of Veterans; Keystone A. A.; Good Will Fire Co., No. 3; Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity; honorary member of E. B. Young Post, 0. A. R.; Loyal Order of Moose; Lehigh Saengerbund; Mystic Circle; John Hay Republican Club; Allentown Swimming and Boating and the Mingo Boating Clubs. Mr. Kohler was married to M. Nellie Seip, July 8, 1899.
