Stiles, Mrs. Mary A. Obituary - Mrs. Mary A. Stiles. The Allentown Item has the following obituary notice of Mrs. Stiles, whose sudden death we announced on Saturday. The community was painfully shocked by the announcement that Mary Amanda, the beloved and esteemed wife of Hon. John D. Stiles, died at 9:30 o'clock Friday night after suffering from the effects of an apoplectic stroke for less than five hours. Mrs. Stiles, though at intervals subject to paralytic attacks, arose Friday morning in unusually fine spirits, and it was a subject of remark by the members of the family that she appeared in better health than they had seen her for many days. She was exceedingly pleasant and cheerful during the day, and between 4 and 5 o'clock visited the residence of the Misses Laura and Cornie Martin, on Hamilton stree, below Penn, where, we understand, a small party of social friends were to gather. Even at this time she manifested no symptoms of the illness; but at about 5 o'clock, as she was walking through the parlor, she was suddenly stricken down. She was speechless and uncounscious, and her entire body was affected. Mr. Stiles, who was in the court house at the time, was hastily summoned, and also Dr. A. J. Martin, the family physician. Everything that the most tender affection and the best medical skill could suggest was done for the unfortunate lady, but she gave no evidence of relief. At. 7 o'clock she was removed to her home, where she continued to linger in an unconscious state until 9:30 o'clock, when she quietly passed away, surrounded by her devoted husband and loving children.

Mrs. Stiles was a daughter of Mr. John G. Gibbons, in his day a distinguished lawyer of Allentown, and was born on the 9th day of December, 1831, attaining the age of 49 years, 1 month and 14 days. Her mother is a daughter of Mr. Jacob Rupp of Fogelsville, and still lives. She was married to Mr. Stiles in the year 1850, and the fruit of their union has been six children, all of whom survive their mother, the youngest being a daughter, aged 13 years. Deceased was a most estimable lady, and her sudden death falls with crushing weight upon her family and friends, and occasions a deep void in the family circle. She was a lady of rare intelligence, and possessed of all the graces which go to embellish the character of woman. She was a devoted wife and an affectionate and tender hearted mother, beloved by all her acquaintances. Exceedingly sympathetic, she was every ready to assist those in want and distress, and her charities have been manifold. Her memory will be cherished most by those who knew her best and longest, and a more worthy tribute could not be bestowed. Her funeral takes place on Thursday, at 2 o'clock P. M.
