Other Facts

Mrs.
Florence Beers, Drums R.2, was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:45 p.m.
Saturday at the Hazleton State General Hospital form injuries received
when struck by a car 20 minutes earlier on Route 309, five miles north
of Hazleton. Mrs. Beers, pronounced dead by Dr. Arthur Koven, died of a
fracture at the base of the skull, according to Ronald Fierro, deputy
Luzerne County Coroner. Fierro, who said no autopsy would be performed,
released the body to the Krapf and Hughes Funeral Home here. Trooper
Richard A. Cummins, Troop N,said the fatality occurred at 9:25 p.m.
about 400 feet south of Goldsworthy’s Store in Butler Township as Mrs.
Beers crossed the highway from west to east. As she reached the right
lane of the northbound section of the highway, she was struck by
a car operated by Timothy Yashur, 25, of 64 Franklin St., Hazleton,
Trooper Cummins said. The impact severed one of the victim’s legs from
her body, the officer said and it was found 10 feet from where the body
landed. The area where the accident took place was unlighted, Trooper
Cummins said and the victim was wearing dark clothing. A passenger in
Yashur’s car, Rita Tomsho, of 157 Berner Ave., was treated at the
emergency room of the Hazleton State General Hospital for injuries to
both arms and released. The Butler Township Community Ambulance
transported Mrs. Beers to the hospital. She was a former Butler
Township school teacher. She was well known in the valley and was
frequently seen walking to and from Hazleton along Route 309.
Mrs. Beers lived in Drums her entire life.
