"George W. Bachman, merchant, P. O. Curham, Bucks county, Pa., was born September 28, 1849, Williams township, Northampton county, Pa. His father, David, was a son of Solomon and Annie Bachman, and was married to Mary, a daughter of George and Catherine Knecht, both of whom were natives of Northampton county. George W. was reared on a farm, and sent to public school until he attained the age of 15 years, when he engaged with his brother, R. K., as clerk in a store. By close adherence to business, he was admitted as a member of the firm several years before he attained the age of manhood. On the night of February 14, 1879, Messrs. Bachman's store was entered by five burglars. They siezed Mr. George W. (who was at the time sleeping in the store), bound and gagged him, placed hand-cuffs on him, and otherwise treated hin in such a manner that for a time his life was despaired of. Then they blew open the safes, securing about $2,500. One of the gang was sent to the Eastern Penitentiary for sever years. The other four escaped. June 2, 1881, he was married to Miss Mary, daughter of Col., W. W. Strader, of WAshington, Warren county, N. J. Their union was blessed with one child, George S., now deceased. Mr. Bachman is a member of the Reformed church, and in politics he is a democrat." |
