Haas, Howard ENGINEER HAAS KILLED

Head Crushed Between His Engine and a Car

Was Fixing Air Brake Trouble

In the Act of Closing AngleCock When Engine Moved and Caught His Head. Had Long Been an Engineer on the Lehigh Valley Road and was Very Popular

Howard Haas, of this city, a well known engineer on the Lehigh Valley railroad was instantly killed at Packerton at 9 a. m. yesterday by being caught between his engine and a car.

The official report of the accident is as follows:

At 9 o'clock this morning, in the Packerton yard, the engine of the extra freight, of which he was engineer, parted from the train and the air hose became disconnected, stopping the engine. Mr. Haas, the engineer, jumped to the ground to close the angle cock on the tank which released the brake on the tank. He then went to the car following the engine, and was in the act of closing the angle cock on the first car, in order to make the air connection, when the engine came back, catching his head between the tank and teh car and crushing his skull. Death was instantaneous.

Deceased was fifty-six years of age and leaves a widow and four children: Newton R., Ernest F., Howard and Ethel Haas, all of the South Side. He resided at No. 931 Wilkesbarre street, South Side, and had a large acquaintance in this vicinity. For several terms he served as a councilman when South Easton was a borough.

Mr. Haas came to South Easton in 1874 from Cressona, Schuylkill county and had been in the employ of the Lehigh Valley railroad as a fireman and engineer since that time.

Four brothers and two sisters also survive as follows: Daniel Haas, of Easton; Wellington Haas, of Sayre, N. Y.; George Haas, of Wilkesbarre; Peter Haas, of Ohio; Mrs. Frank Stitzer, living in the state of Wyoming, and a sister residing at Sharon, Pa.

Heckenwelder, John "We have to announce the death of the pious, learned and venerable John Heckewelder of Bethlehem. He died on Friday the 31st of January, at 6 o'clock in the morning, at the advanced age of seventy nine years. Had he lived until next month, he would have attained the age of eighty.

The Rev. John Heckewelder, having spent the greater part of his life among the Indian nations, was little known in this country, until our lamented Dr. Wistar, who was an excellent judge of merit, persuaded him to communicate to the world the immense fund of information he possessed respecting the history, manners and customs of the aborigines of our land. Wistar did nto live to see that work published, which has placed Heckewelder among the most interesting writers that his country had produced, but by means of its publication, its author became more generally known, and endeared himself to all who had the happiness of his acquaintance, not only by the knowledge that he possessed, and which he freely communicated to all who were desirous of it, but by all those excellent qualities of the heart which command love, esteem, veneration and respect. His religion was solid, his piety sincere, his modesty unassumed, and his benevolence unbounded. His loss will be felt and regretted by the country at large, whose literary fame he largely contributed to extend; but to those who were admitted to the intimacy of his friendship, and to that religious society of which he was the ornament and the pride, that loss is a misfortune which no words can sufficiently express.

We understand that Mr. Heckewelder has left some posthumous works, which will be published in due time. - Columbian Observer. "
