Among the pioneers, hunters and trappers of Beech Woods, Andrew Lester the "bravest of the brave", having killed in his youth a yearling bear with a club; and in his maturity trapped and caught wolves, tied their jaws together and led them home, to the great amazement of women, children and cowards - Wayne Co. herald.

Pelee W. Long

Evening Gazette (Port Jervis, New York) April 5, 1870

Veteran Mustered Out

With sincere regret, says the Milford Herald, we learn that Mr. Pelee W. Long, of Blooming Grove, Pike County, Pa., departed this life on the 27th, in the 79th year of his age. Mr. Long was a soldier in the war of 1812-13, and served under Gen. Scott in the memorable conflict at Lundy's Lane. Thus one by one the fading away those aged defenders of our country's honor - those connecting links between this and a better if not wiser generation.

Mr. Jacob Perry, says the Milford Herald, aged 94 years, who recently died in this county, was a soldier in Napoleon's army during the Revolution of 1791. He has long been a resident of this county. There are two other soldiers of that army yet living in the county namely: Mr. Phillip Stark, of Dingman township, and Mr. john Perot of this township, both of whom are upwards of 90 years of age.

William K. Wells

In our announcements of deaths we are pained to record that of W. K. Wells, of Milford, Pa., who died on Saturday last, of consumption. Mr. Wells was a brother of Messrs. Peter and Edgar Wells of this village, and was well known to many of our citizens, having formerly occupied the position of ticket agent at this place. He was genial, warm hearted, and beloved by a large circle of friends, who regret his early demise, while in the springtime of life, and full of bright hopes and prospects.

Died Oct 16 - At Milford, Pa., Wm. K. Wells, aged 28 years.

Melancholy. - A young man in this vicinity, Mr. Daniel Young had in his possession a rattlesnake about six weeks, which he intended shortly to take to Philadelphia. On Friday as he was playing with and tormenting it as usual, the snake suddenly struck him on the back of the right hand with its fangs. Notwithstanding every medical assistance which could be obtained, he died the next day, having lived but about twenty-four hours after the fatal bite.
