Charles E. Simpson, private, Company A, 310th Machine Gun Battalion. For extraordinary heroism in action near Verdun, France, November 5, 1918. With two other soldiers, he voluntarily left a place of safety, went forward 40 meters under machine-gun lire in plain view of the enemy, and rescued another soldier who bad been blinded by a machine-gun bullet and was helplessly staggering about. Residence at enlistment: Great Bend, Pa.
