Creating Tables

In this lesson, you will learn how to create a table and insert it in your web page. There are several different places where you can invoke the "table" window. You can click on the INSERT option, the TABLE option or the table icon.

Look at the "table-settings" window below.

You need to have a rough estimate of how many rows and columns you need. You don't have to be exact. Rows and columns can always be added or deleted as you go along. Experiment with the spacing and table dimensions. You'll have to decide whether you want a caption or a different background color. Try the various border widths. If you like to organize your data in tavles but you don't want the borders to show, then set your border width to zero.

Click once on the table below. Then right-click on it. Another window will come up, allowing you to add or delete rows and columns. You can also choose Table Properties to change the look of the table. A quick way to adjust the column width is to position your cursor over the border lines and drag it, either horizontally or vertically.

Let's say that you would like to merge the three cells in the first row into one cell. Highlight the three cells and then right-click on them. Next select "Span Selected Cells." See example below.

Note: You can also span selected columns.

Remember that you can cut, copy and paste text within a table.

To delete the entire table, click outside of the table and drag your cursor to the inside of the table. Now right-click and select CUT.

TIP: If you have a large table that needs to be sorted, you will NOT be able to accomplish it in VisualPage, but you can create an Excel file (.xls extension), sort it within Excel, copy the text and then paste it into VisualPage. Once you have inserted it, adjust the column widths. If you forgot to use Excel and created the large unsorted table in VisualPage, you will not be able to copy the table in VisualPage and then paste it into Excel. You will lose the formatting, including any links.

Wonderful! You now know how to create a table.

On to the next lesson!
