Rev. John Maxson.—The following
notice of the death of Rev. John Maxson, appeared in the Newport Gazette
of March 5, 1778. Maxson was the fourth pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist
Church, in Newport, R. I. His labors as pastor in Newport commenced at an
important epoch in the history of the country, and continued through the
protracted difficulties with France and Great Britain, the latter of which
terminated in the Revolutionary struggle. Mr. Maxson was ordained to the
office of elder over the Newport Church, Nov. 24, 1754, which position he
filled until his death, which occurred March 2, 1778, at, the age of 65
years. "Last Monday died the Rev'd John Maxson, Minister of
the Seventh Day Baptist Church in this Town. In this Person were united
all the essential Qualities of a good Christian, and his moral as well as
social Character deserve the highest Tiibute of Praise. From the
Principles of that Religion which he professed to believe, he was firmly
led to stem the Torrent of popular Error and Delusion and happily
preserved his Allegiance to his latest moments. The Conduct of many of his
Brothers of the Baptist Clergy, in supporting the present unnatural
Opposition to Government, filled him with the deepest Concern, not only as
being repugnant to the Principles of the Christian Religion, but as having
a Tendency to encourage that factious, persecuting and intolerant spirit
they themselves had often experienced and remonstrated against, and which
from the first settlement of this Country have disgraced the Annals of New
England." |

| Say Remington Was Insane Newport, R. I. Aug 20 - It is said by friends of the Van Alens that Robert R. Remington, who shot and killed himself yesterday, was insane. He has been engaged to Miss May Van Alen and she had broken the engagement. This, it is believed, led to the suicide. | Newport Daily News (Newport, Rhode Island), Friday,
August 28, 1846 The funeral procession of Mr. Stanford, yesterday, presented a truly solemn sight. Mr. S. being a Mason, which added very much to the solemnity of the scene. The procession was headed by the Tyler with drawn sword then followed the German Band, St. John's Lodge, No. 1, Hearse, Mourners and citizens generally. Such scenes, we think, re well calculated to make a deep and lasting impression on the minds of those who are not devoid of all feeling. - submitted by Nancy Piper |
