Rhode
Island Miscellaneous News Stories
The Centinel, Gettysburg, PA, August 24, 1808 A valuable Coal Mine has within a few weeks past been
discovered near Bristol Ferry in Rhode Island. The stratum is 40 feet
deep, and of considerable extent; and the coal is of a quality nearly
resembling that of Kilhenny. Captain Earl, of the Packet Huntress from
Newport has brought several loads of it as a sample. It has been tried by
the smiths in this city, and in the steam engine of the Manhattan Company,
and is found to equal if not to excel any other coal they have hitherto
been in the habit of using. -- N. Y. pap.

The Centinel, Gettysburg, PA, June 7,
1809 Natural
Phenomenon In the north part
of Cumberland, in the state of Rhode Island, near Attleborough line,
twelve miles from town, about the beginning of March, in the night, the
ground for the space of two or three acres began shaking and continued two
or three minutes. The houses shook considerably; the water in a pond
adjacent seemed considerably agitated, and there appeared many indications
of an earthquake; but it passed off, and the next day about 2 in the
afternoon, the same quivering of the earth was observed. Since,
every few days, the earth shakes with the same appearance, and sometimes
so much so as to break crockery ware in the houses. These continued
convulsions have alarmed the inhabitants near and on the place, and no way
can they account for it. Some have removed. [Submitted by Nancy Piper]
