Providence County Obituaries

Alexis RICHARD, a well known old resident of this city, died this morning at his home, 231 Harrison street, after a short illness.  Mr. Richard has resided in this city for many years and for the past 23 years had been a valued employee of E. Trafton, contractor.  He leaves a family of grown up children, six daughters and one son.  The funeral will be held on Saturday morning from the Church of St. Jean-Baptiste, following which the interment will take place at St. Francis Cemetery. Charles W. ROSS, the victim of a suicidal attempt with a revolver early Saturday morning, died last night at the residence of his father, John E. Ross, No. 535 Pawtucket avenue.  It was a surprise to the attending physicians that Mr. Ross lived so long, as the bullet shattered the skull, and entered the brain.  In view of this fact every effort to remove it was in vain.  Mr. Ross remained in a semi-conscious condition until his death.  It was stated that the reason why he attempted to take his life was on account of the probability of losing the power of his left arm, which had become disabled some time ago.

The deceased was a cripple from the time he was two years of age.  He had been a familiar figure on the streets in the vicinity of his home, propelling himself in a wheel chair.  Until a few weeks ago Mr. Ross was a cheerful member of the family, but recently he became despondent.  [Pawtucket Times, Jan 4, 1898, Submitted by Karen Seeman]
