Southern Part of State Storm Swept Lightning Flashes Almost Continuously at the Pier--Ashaway House Struck. Providence, July 15--A heavy thunder storm struck the state yesterday. Although the lightning his in several places, no great damage was done. The wind blew with the force of a tempest for several minutes before the rain began to fall. Naragansett Pier was almost the center of the storm and here it raged fiercely for the greater part of the afternoon. Despite the fact that for two or three hours the lightning played in flash after flash that made it seem almost like the continuous streak no houses were struck and no damage done. One bolt of lightning about the middle of the afternoon, struck down on the lawn between the Gladstone and the Europeas hotels and tore the turf up badly but did no other damage. The guests at both places were badly frightened for a time but there was no panic. At Newport the storm came and went several times before it finally passed away, but no places were hit and no damage was done. The rain fell in torrents and there was a high wind during the afternoon. Down in Ashaway the home of Charles Partelow was struck and four members of the family, sitting in the living room, had a narrow escape from injury. The lightning struck the chimney and from there went to the sitting room and demolished a looking glass and some furniture. No other damages were done. In this city the distant rumbling of the thunder could be heard and an occasional flash of lightning could be seen. The rain fell during the day, but there was nowhere near the severity that was felt further south. The thermometer failed to mount very during the day, 77 at 9:30 a. m., being the high point, while 68 at midnight was the lowest. At 6 o clock last night it was 72 with a humidity mark of 88.
