Louise Rice Horton Williamston,
Sept. 18 - Mrs. Louise Rice, relict of the late Charles Elijah
Horton, died at her home here on Sunday morning, September 8, at
3:15 o'clock after an illness of five days. She was in her 33rd year
and had enjoyed most remarkable health all of her life. Funeral
services were held on Monday afternoon, her four sons, E. R. Horton
of Anderson, H. I. Horton of Columbia, E. E. Horton of Abbeville and
Maj. J. R. Horton of the United States Marines, and two grandsons,
H. I. Horton, Jr., of Spartanburg and E. R. Horton, Jr., of
Anderson, being her pallbearers. Besides the above she is survived
by two daughters, Mrs. J. R. Emerson of Gainesville, Fla., and Miss
Louise Horton of Williamston. She was an active member of the
Baptist Church, seldom missing attending services, even Sunday
school. She has one son, Maj. J. R. Horton, and seven grandsons in

Augustus
Hembree Expires Yesterday Well Known Andersonian Laid
to Rest at Concord This Afternoon Augustus M. Hembree, well known
Andersonian, died shortly before noon Sunday at his residence, 117
Rose Hill. Mr. Hembree was 67 years of age. His death
comes as a shock to relatives and friends in this section and is
deplored generally. For many years Mr. Hembree followed the
occupation of a farmer. He had not been active during the past
year, howver, due to illness which extended over a period of about
seven months. He was a native of this county and spent all of
his life here. Mr. Hembree was the son of the late A.F.
Hembree. He was a devout churchman and was connected with the
Concord Baptist church. Surviving him besides his widow, who
was Miss Frances Elizabeth McClain, are three daughters and one son,
Mrs. Z.C. Simpson; Mrs. E.U. Campbell, Miss Iris Hembree and M.D.
Hembree, all of Anderson. He is also survived by two brothers,
J. L. Hembree of Anderson and Marcus King of Walhalla. Funeral
services were held at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the Concord
Baptist church. The services were conducted by the Rev. E.L.
Engley, assisted by Dr. R. N. Pratt and the Rev. W. W.
Leathers. Interment will take place in the Concord
cemetery. Active pallbearers wil include Messrs. Raymond
Hembree, L. N. Hembree, Sloan Campbell, Carl McClain, Earl McClain
and Willis McClain. The honorary escort will be made up of
Messrs. J. R. C. Griffin, W. P. Stevenson, G. F. McConnell, B. H.
Thompson, Rufus Hembree, Joe Eskew, s. W. Williford, J. M. Knox, W.
C. Gilmer, L. L. Campbell, Dr. Harrison Pruitt, Wilton Lee, S. J.
Watson and I. O. Hembree. G. F. Tolly and Son in charge.

Mrs. A.
M. Hembree Mrs. Frances McClain Hembree, 90, died
yesterday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Zera C.
Simpson, Calhoun Street Extension after a three-week illness.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Concord Baptist
Church, of which she was a faithful member for many years.
Rev. Ernest Bailes and Dr. F. C. Mcconnell will officiate.
Burial will be in the family plot of the church cemetery. Active
pallbearers will be Prue Simpson, Carroll Campbell, Ed K. Meeks,
John L. Pruitt, Jr., Larry Campbell, and Gene Simpson. Members
of the Men's Bible Class of the church with L. N. Hembree, Raymond
Axmann, W. C. Gilmer and Neal Parks will form the honorary
escort. The body lies in state at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Simpson, pending the service. Mrs. Hembree was a native
of Anderson, a daughter of the late Isaac McClain and Nancy Martin
McClain. After attending schools of the county, she attended
Johnson Female Seminary in Anderson and later taught school for five
years. One of her pupils was the late J. B. Felton, one time
superintendent of education for Anderson County. She was
active in the work of her church and Sunday school while health
permitted and was beloved by a wide circle of friends and relatives.
Her husband, the late Augustus M. Hembree, died March 6, 1927.
Survivors include three daughters and one son, Mrs. Zera C. Simpson,
Mrs. Ervin Campbell, Mrs. John L. Pruitt, and Mr. Duane Hembree, all
of Anderson; eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Sulivan-King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Hembree, 70, of 211 Cater St., who died Friday. Dr. Cort R.
Flint and the Rev. A. D. Wall will officiate and burial will be at
Concord Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers: Prue
Simpson, Carroll Campbell, Johnny Campbell, Frank Clement, Frank
Vickery and Walter Bratcher. Honorary escort will be composed
of officials and employes of the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. The
body is at the mortuary, the family at the residence.

Mrs. M. D.
Hembree Mrs. Velma Woolbright Hembree, 48, wife of M.
D. (Jack) Hembree and a well known matron of 211 Cater St., died
suddenly about 10 a.m. yesterday while visiting at the home of her
mother, Mrs. W. N. Woolbright, near Townville. Mrs. Hembree
was a native of the Townville community, but had made her home in
Anderson for a number of years. She was born March 31, 1911, a
daughter of Mrs. Myrtle Bagwell Woolbright, and the late W. N.
Woolbright and was a member of the First Baptist Church of
Anderson. In addition to her mother of the Townville
community, she is survived by her husband of the home; one daughter,
Mrs. B. C. Cromer, Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., and one son, Ralph Lee
Hembree of Anderson and Clemson College; four brothers, Ed
Woolbright, of West Palm Beach, Fla., Lewis, Guy and Herbert
Woolbright, all of Townville; three sisters, Mrs. S. W. Dickson, of
Westminster, Mrs. H. D. Newton, of Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs. J. W.
Reeves, of Pendleton, and two grandchildren. Funeral services
will be held from the chapel of the Sullivan-King Mortuary at 11
a.m. Wednesday with Dr. Cort R. Flint, her pastor,
officiating. Place of burial will be announced.
Pallbearers: S. W. Dickson, Dick Newton, Roy Brown, Melvin Stewart,
Wilbur Woolbright, and William Woolbright. Pending the

Hembree Anderson - Alma Roukoskie Hembree, 86, of 510
29 By-Pass North, died Friday, April 4, 1997, at Anderson Area
Medical Center. Born in Hart County, Ga., she was a retired
employee of J. C. Penney Company in the Alteraton Department.
She was a member of Concord Baptist Church and the Carrie Griffin
Sunday School Class. She was a member of the W.M.U. and served
as President for three years, sang in the church choir, and was
active in all phases of church work as long as her health
permitted. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jack "Annette"
Sams of Anderson and Mrs. Bob "Harriette" Walden of Clinton, Mo.,
two sons, John Dyar Hembree of Canton, Ohio, and Jerry B. Hembree of
Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Claude Roukoskie of Hartwell, Ga.;
eight grandchildren, Sharon Fox of Deepwater, Mo., Janelle Hembree
of Anderson, Mark Hembree of Solon, Ohio; Patrick Hembree, Melanie
Thomas and Joel Hembree, all of Canton, Ohio; Julie Dekoning of
Easley, and Carmen Newhouse of Jacksonville, Fla.; and 10
great-grandchildren. She was the widow of J. C. Hembree and
the daughter of the late John and Louise Ebernickle Roukoskie.
funeral services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Concord Baptist Church by
Rev. Bob Marcaurelle and Rev. Howard Hembree. Burial will be
in the church cemetery. The body is at Sullivan-King Mortuary
where the family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
Sunday. the family is at the residence and at the home of a
daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Jack Sams, 208 Woodridge Court,

Hembree J. C. Hembree, 66, of 510 29 Bypass north,
died in Anderson Memorial Hospital, Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. after
several years of declining health, and six weeks of serious
illness. He was born March 11, 1906 in Hart County, Ga., the
son of the late Elias Benson and Milie Dyar Hembree. Surviving
are his wife, the former Alama Roukoski of the home; two daughters,
Mrs. Jack "Annette" Sams of Anderson and Mrs. Ned "Harriette"
Chandler of Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, John Dyar Hembree of Canon,
Ohio and Jerry B. Hembree of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight
grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. George Chastain and Mrs. H. G.
Allan of Hartwell, Ga. Funeral services will be held in
Concord Baptist Church Friday at 3 p.m. with the Revs. Bob
Marcaurelle and Howard Hembree officiating. Burial in the
church cemtery, Sullivan-King directing. Pallbearers:
George McMullan, Harold Allan, Wilbur Chastain, A. Jack Hembree,
Peyton Mildord, Lonnie Isom. The honoraries will be the men's
fellowship class of Concord Baptist Church, Frank Harris, Heyward

John D. Hembree CANTON,
Ohio - John D.Hembree, 67, of. Canton, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 199B,
at Mercy Medical Center. Born in Anderson, S.C., he had lived in
Canton since 1965. He was the owner-operator of John D. Hembree Co.,
Inc., a welding fabrication shop. Surviving are widow, Mary,of
the home; daughters, Janelle Hembree of Anderson, S.C. and Melanie
Thomas of Canton; sons, Mark of Solon, Patrick of Massillon, and
Joel Of Canton; sisters, Harriette Walden of Clinton, Mo., and
Annette Sams of Anderson, S.C; a brother Jerry of Jacksonville,
Fla.; and four-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 9
p.m. Friday at Don Williams Funeral Home; 2608 West Tuscarawas St.,
Canton; Ohio 44708-4702. Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at the
funeral home. Cremation will follow the service. A memorial service
will be held at Concord Baptist Church at a time and date to be
announced. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Federline Succumbs Monday BELTON, June 21— John
Richard Federline, Sr., well known and respected Belton textile man.
died M. his,home Monday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock following an
illness of some three months duration. Mr. Federline, who was 71
years old, returned only two weeks ago from the St. Elizabeth
hospital in Richmond, Va., where he underwent treatment for some
time. His passing brings sorrow to a wide circle of relatives and
friends throughout this and other sections where he was known. For
the past 20 years he had been overseer of the spinning department of
the Belton mills. He was born and reared in Laurel, Maryland, the
son of the late Richard A. and Elizabeth Able Federline, of that
state. For practically all of his life he had been prominently
connected with the textile industry, having held responsible
positions with the Victor-Monaghan company, of Greenville, the
Pepperell mills; the Mt. Vernon-Woodbury company, and others.
Besides his widow, Mrs. Mary Slater Federline, he is survived by
three sons, John R. Federline, Jr., of Lanett, Alabana, Waynard and
Audley Federline, both of Spartanburg; one daughter, Mrs. J. W.
Muller, of Columbia. Funeral services will
be held Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from the Second Baptist
church of Belton, with the Rev. J.E. Crawford, in association with
the Rev. J. E. Lawton, and the Rev. W. S. Henry,
conducting the services. The body will be consigned to its last
resting place in the Belton cemetery, with Cox and Company funeral

LEO P. FOUSEK BE BURIED
TODAY Fred Poore, Also Burned in Tank Truck Wreck,
In Critical Condition ANDERSON, May 23. — Funeral a
services for the late Leo P. Fousek, 27, of 1223 South Main street,
who was fatally injured in a motor accident yesterday morning near
Ridgeland when an oil tank truck he was driving overturned, will be
held at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the McDougald-Johnson
Funeral home on South Main street, conducted by the Rev. Fr.
Spiesman of St. Joseph's Catholic church of which Mr. Fousek was a
member. Burial will be in Silver Brook cemetery. The active
pallbearers are Roy Crawford, Calhoun McClellan, George Thompson,
Robert Getsinger, Fred Gibson and Vernon Ward. Mr. Fousek is
survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Fousek of Anderson; his
widow, and three brothers and two sisters, Carl, Paul and Luther
Fousek; Mrs. Janie Evans, all of Anderson, and Mrs. Mary Hartnelt of
Fairplay. Mr. Fousek was fatally injured and badly burned early
yesterday when a large tank truck of the Anderson Petroleum company,
of Anderson, overturned and was destroyed by fire some miles from
Ridgeland. Details of how the accident occurred were not learned.
Fred Poore, about 23, also in the cab of the truck with Fousek at
the time of the accident, was seriously burned and was under
treatment today in a Ridgeland hospital to which he was taken
immediately after the accident. His condition was too serious, it
was said, to permit his removal to Anderson. Reports from the
Ridgeland hospital today indicated that Poore's condition is
critical. The two were on their way to Savannah, Ga., for a load of

HENRY F.
HANKS BELTON, May 11 — Henry Folger Hanks, 55, died in
General hospital in Greenville this morning at 5 o'clock. He had
been in ill health for the past month. Mr. Hanks was well known
throughout Anderson County. Several years ago he was a cotton buyer,
but for the past few years had engaged in the mercantile business
here. In addition to being an active Mason, he took a large part in
the civic affairs of Belton. He was a life long resident of this
community and was the son of William and Nancy Williamson Hanks.
Surviving are two brothers, R. N. and W. G. Hanks, and three
sisters, Mrs. J. P. Ivester, Mrs. S. M. Horton and Mrs. ? C. Wilson,
all of Belton. Funeral services will be held from the home of Mrs.
Wilson on South Main Street Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock,
conducted by Dr. J. M. Burnett. Burial will be in the Belton
cemetery. The active pallbearers will be nephews: Carol and Bill
Wilson, George and Jacob Ivester, Alford Hanks and Robert Hanks. Jr.
The honorary escort will include I. W. Cox, M. T. McCuen, W. H.
Cobb, W. K. Stringer, John A. Horton. Louis Seel, J. A. Cox, T.
Frank Watkins, W. H. §herard, A S. Fant, W. C. Finley, Dr. W. R.

Rites BELTON May 4—Final rites for Elijah Wardlaw
Griffin, 28, well known and respected young business man and civic
leader of Belton who died at the Anderson Hospital Friday following
a brief Illness, were conducted from the First Baptist Church ot
Belton this afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Rev. Lewis G. Prince
conducted the services and burial followed in the Belton cemetery.
Active pallbearers included J. K. Phillips. James Cox, Walter T.
Cox. Jr., Blair Poore. Pete Brown and Harold Clinkscales. Members of
the Masonic Lodge, the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Marshall Bible
Class composed the escort of honor. Mr. Griffin spent most of his
life in Belton. He was graduated from Belton High School in 1935,
and from Clemson College in 1939 with a B. S. Degree in Chemistry.
Upon graduation he was affiliated with the Southern Cotton Oil
Company in Columbia as a chemist for three years. Later he entered
in business for himself in Belton. In addition to his widow. Mrs.
Virginia Ash by Griffin, he is survived by two small sons, Edward
Wardlaw and Carl Ashby Griffin; and his mother. Mrs. Lola W.

H. G. Holland Is Claimed By
Death HONEA PATH. Aug. 8 — Henry Grady Holland, well known
resident of Honea Path, died at his home, 1262 Mississippi street,
Monday afternoon at 2;45 o'clock following an illness of several
days. He was 48 years old. Mr. Holland
was born, in the Pendleton community, but spent the
greater part of his life in the Bethany section and at Honea Path.
He was a member of the Bethany Baptist church. Surviving him in
addition to his widow, Mrs. Mary Holland, is a son Jack Holland, and
time daughters, Misses Aleathea, Annie and Sadie Holland, all of
Honea Path. Four half-sisters, Mrs. Arthur Garrison, Mrs. Fannie
Hicks, both of Pendleton, Mrs. Lula Williams of Augusta; Ga.. and
Mrs. Harmon Williams Anderson, also survive. Funeral services were
held from the Church of God here Tuesday; afternoon at 4 o'clock.
The Rev. J. H. Powell, in association with the Rev. Louis Coward
conducted the last rites. Interment followed in East View cemetery.
Active pallbearers included Homer Thompson, Truman Smith, J. C.
Long. J. T. Long. O. P. Werner, and F. H. Leverette. W. B. Cox and

Elmer Hughes Crash Kills Laurens Man CLINTON—Robert
Elmer Hughes died at the Laurens County Hospital at 11:30 p.m.
yesterday from injuries received when his car plunged from the
Rabun's Creek bridge near Laurens. The body has been taken to the
Gray Funeral Home here but funeral arrangements have not been made.
He was driving alone in a 1949 Chevrolet, thus the time of the
accident is uncertain. State Highway Patrolman Jim Tankersley
investigated the wreck. Mr. Hughes' driver's license gave his
address as 122 Lowndes Hill Road, Greenville, but it is understood
that he has recently been a resident of this city.
Driver Misses Bridge;

LAURENS, Dec, 2—The lone occupant of a 1949 Chevrolet
coupe which plunged 50 feet off Rabun's Creek bridge near tare some
lime tonight was in critical shape at Laurens County Hospital. Slate
Highway Patrolman Jim Talikersley identified him from his driver's
license as Robert Elmer Hughes, 31. His license address was 122
Lowndes Hill Road, Green-ville, but efforts to locate his family
there and at Williamston were unsuccessful. Tankersley said doctors

May Harbin Mrs. Lila May Walters Harbin, 47, wife of
Tommy H. Harbin, of 141 Boyce St., died at her residence at 12:10
yesterday afternoon, following several months of declining health
and a serious illness of one week. Mrs. Harbin was a native of
Oconee County, and came to Anderson to make her home 20 years, ago
from Tarpon Springs. Fl. She was employed in the cloak
room at Appleton Mill. She was a daughter of J.
--Walters and Sally Oakley --ters, and a member of St.
Joseph Catholic Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived
by her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Walters, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; six
brothers. Beyce Walters, Tarpon Springs, Curtis Walters, Dunedin.
Fla., Furman and Dwain Walters. Clearwater, Fla., Edwin and Hollis
Wallers, St. Petersburg. Fla.: two sisters, Mrs. Sara Dobie and Mrs.
Katherine Mickler, Tarpon Springs, Fla. The rosary will be recited
in the north lounge of Sullivan-King Mortuary at 8 p. m. today.
Funeral services will be held from the mortuary chapel at 10 a. m.
Wednesday with Father Murphy officiating. Burial will be in New
Silver Brook cemetery. The body will be at the mortuary, the family

Farmer ELBERTON, Ga. — Mrs. Arlie Elizabeth Ray
Farmer, 75, widow of James R. Farmer, Sr., died Monday night in
Elbert County Hospital. A native of Hart County, she was the
daughter of the late Henry Doyle and Nettie Steadman Ray. She owned
and operated the Elberton Credit Bureau and was a member of the
First Baptist Church. Survivors: three sons, James R. Farmer, Jr. of
Athens, Robert W. Farmer, Sr. of Elberton and Jack D. Farmer of
Abbeville, S. C; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.
Funeral 3 p.m. Wednesday, First Baptist Church, the Rev. W. W.
Richardson and the Rev. Everett Gossett officiating. Burial Elmhurst
Cemetery. Pallbearers: Henry Doyle Ray, Claude Ray, Jr., Bodie
Jones, Estee Kellum, Roy Burt Ray, David Ray, Jack Abbott and Dick

H. 28 years old died in Anderson District on May 16,
1849. Laurensville Herald 5/25/1849, page 3; for settlement of the
estate the administrator John Maxwell advertised for sale on
December 4 the plantation of Edward H. Earl deceased in Greenville
District consisting of 30 slaves, 18 mules, 30 head of cattle, 10
head of horses, two fine saddle horses, 150 hogs, 700 barrels of
corn, wheat, oats, rye and fodder with many other articles. Also
situated on the Three Forks of Saluda 17 miles north of Greenville
CH near the state road 300 acres of good bottomland and 1200 of
