Anna Turner
Denmark, Sept. 18 - Mrs. Anna Turner, widow of G. Washington Turner, died at her home near here Sunday and the burial was held Monday. Mrs. Turner is survived by two sisters, Mrs. M. A. Koger of Denmark and Mrs. George Henry Pooser of Columbia and one brother, Isaac Jennings of Denmark, and four sons all of Denmark, John D. Turner, Fred J. Turner, George Turner and Tom Turner and three daughters, Misses Rosabel and Pauline Turner of Denmark and Mrs. James Cleckley of Cope. (The State September 19, 1918)


BAMBERG, SC-- SEGRIS HIGHTOWER, 94, of 28 Third St., Bamberg, S.C., died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at Bamberg County Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, in the Cooner Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Futrell officiating. Burial will follow in Bamberg County Memory Gardens.
Mr. Hightower was born October 4, 1911, in Denmark, a son of the late Henry Brunson Hightower and Ella Tant Hightower. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Bamberg. He retired from E.I. Dupont after 23 years of service at Savannah River Site. He was a WWII veteran, enjoyed fishing, gardening and was an avid automobile enthusiast. He was predeceased by his wife; one son, Henry Reed Hightower; and daughter-in-law, Debra Hightower.
Survivors include one daughter, Eleanor H. and Steve Mann of Lexington; three grandsons, Thomas Mann of Clemson, Russell Hightower of Columbia and Heath Hightower of Bamberg; one granddaughter; Frances Mann of Lexington; two brothers, Harvey Hightower of The Methodist Oaks, Orangeburg, and Wilbur Hightower of Bamberg; two sisters, Mildred Hutto of Bamberg, and Poly Meyers of Bamberg.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cooner Funeral Home Chapel, Bamberg.

Bamberg, SC-- Harold Larkin "Hal" Kinard, 47, of 11195 Heritage Highway, Bamberg, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Lexington Medical Center after an extended illness.  The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Bamberg, with the Rev. Jim Dennis officiating. Burial will follow in Bamberg County Memory Gardens.  Mr. Kinard was born Feb. 26, 1956, in Bamberg, a son of the late Harold W. Kinard, DVM, and Miriam Ponds Kinard. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in agricultural economics. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was past president of the Men's Bible Class, former advisor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship, and past member of the Bamberg Jaycees. He enjoyed all church activities. He was predeceased by his father, Harold W. Kinard, DVM.  Survivors include his mother of the home; two sisters, Kathy K. Cataldo of Fort Mill, Kaye K. Crosby of Bamberg; one nephew, James C. Mithell, DVM, of Bamberg; two nieces, Allison and Meredith Cataldo of Fort Mills; one great-nephew, Cade Kinard Mitchell of Bamberg; a number of aunts and uncles and cousins.  Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 26 at the Cooner Funeral Home of Bamberg.

BAMBERG, S.C.-Funeral services for J. Frank Folk, 71, of Bamberg, retired railroad official, merchant and farmer, who died Friday after a brief illness, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Cooner Funeral Home.  Dr. James P. Carroll and the Rev. W. W. Rogers will officiate. Burial will be in South End Cemetery. Date: 1964-09-26; Paper: Augusta Chronicle contributed by a Friend of Genealogy.

Denmark , July 8. – Saturday morning R. L. Ziegler died at his residence in Denmark after an illness of several months. The announcement of his death was received with much sadness by his numerous friends throughout the county.  Mr. Zeigler was about 56 years of age, and was one of the most highly respected men of his community and his death removes one whose place it will be hard to fill. Mr. Zeigler was a consistent member of the Denmark church and had always been an active member. He is survived by his wife and several children and two brothers, L. C. Zeigler of Bamberg and R. J. Zeigler of Allendale, besides a number of other relatives. He was a brother of the late Mrs. J. A. Byrd, who died only a few months ago.  The remains were interred at the village cemetery at 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends, the services being in charge of the Masonic order, of which he was a faithful member. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, which attested in a small way the high esteem in which he was held. [State – 9 July 1922 ; transcribed by Marla Zwakman]

Bamberg , March 2. – Miss Ethel Bamberg, the only daughter of Capt. and Mrs. W. S. Bamberg, died here this morning about 6 o’clock . Her death did not come as a surprise, as she has been ill for a long while, but the announcement caused sorrow throughout the town. She was a young woman just blossomed into womanhood, being about 21 years of age. She was the idol of her parents and brothers.  Miss Bamberg was a grandniece of the late F. M. Bamberg, and has many relatives.  This is the fourth death among Bamberg ’s young women within three months. No one of the four had reached over 21 years. Sarah Louisa, eldest daughter of E. H. and A. L. Rodgers, died at Bamberg , Barnwell District, S. C., on the 31st day of January, 1864, in the tenth year of her age, after 18 hours of severe suffering. [ Charleston Mercury – 26 May 1864 ; transcribed by Marla Zwakman]
 
Hattie Amanda, youngest daughter of E. H. and A. L. Rodgers, died at Bamberg , Barnwell District, S. C., on the 10th day of February, 1864, in the sixth year of her age, after 5 days of severe suffering. [ Charleston Mercury – 26 May 1864 ; transcribed by Marla Zwakman]

Ann Lavinia Rodgers, the beloved wife of E. H. Rodgers, died at Bamberg , Barnwell District, S. C., on the 30th day  of April, 1864, in her forty-eighth year, after 87 days of illness, which was attended with great mental and bodily suffering. Bamberg , Jan. 18. – Mrs. Martha E. Hewitt, the oldest resident of Bamberg , died today in her eighty-ninth year. [State – 19 Jan. 1892 ; transcribed by Marla Zwakman ]

Bamberg , June 23. – Mrs. Hennie I. Knight, the wife of A. Wilkes Knight, editor of the Bamberg Herald, died at her home last night about 7:30 o’clock . Mrs. Knight had been in bad health for some time, but it was not generally known that she was seriously ill until the past few days. Her death came as a surprise and a shock to the community. She has been an active religious worker, having been the organist at Trinity Methodist church for several years until about two years ago. She was a teacher in the Sunday school and an active member of the missionary societies. She was a woman of great intelligence and culture, and was very popular. Mrs. Knight was Miss Hennie Legg of Manning before here marriage about eighteen years ago. She leaves three children and a sister, besides her husband. The Rev. W. H. Hodges, pastor of the Trinity Methodist church, conducted the funeral services and the internment took place at South End cemetery. [State – 24 June 1911 ; transcribed by Marla Zwakman ]

Bamberg , Jan.2. – H. J. Brabham died this morning at about 9 o’clock after a lingering illness of several weeks. No resident of this section was more highly respected and loved. His life for long years has been intimately connected with the progress of Bamberg . He was a veteran of the War Between the Sections, a staunch member and officer of the Methodist church, a former mayor of the town, and for a long period has occupied the position of president of the Bamberg Banking company. Surviving him are his wife, his sons, Henry J. Brabham, Jr., of Bamberg , Vernon Brabham of Cope, Otis Brabham of Allendale, and his daughter, Mrs. Leroy Wilson of Allendale. Bamberg, Jan. 10. – James Matheson Eaves, son of Mr. A. N. Eaves of our town, died this morning at 8 o’clock . He was just 21 years of age and had begun a very useful career. The fatal disease was pneumonia complicated with meningitis. The patient showed remarkable vitality, but had to succumb after many days of struggle.  This young man had a host of friends in the lower part of the State. He was one of many for his gentlemanly deportment at all times. His extreme regard for others has made him the favorite of our town from boyhood. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. The body will be interred in the cemetery tomorrow morning, funeral services in the Presbyterian church, Rev. H. R. Murchison officiating. [State – 11 Jan. 1897; transcribed by Marla Zwakman]

Bamberg, Dec. 20. – Mr. W. L. Carter, of the Ehrhardt section died at his home Tuesday, after a brief illness. Mr. Carter was one of the county’s substantial citizens, and was an old Confederate veteran. He was 63 years of age, and leaves several sons and daughters to mourn his death. Mr. D. H. Hutto of the Lees section died very suddenly at his home this week. Mr. Hutto was apparently in good health the day before his death, having been in Bamberg attending to some business. He was a very large and successful planter. [State – 21 Dec. 1907; transcribed by Marla Zwakman]
