Edward Goethie Sr.

Burton - Edward Goethie, Sr. 89, died September 14, 2005.  Survivors: sons, Rufus, Benjamin, Samuel, Douglas, Edward, Jr., Clifford and David; two daughters, Alma and Edrina; other relatives.  Funeral: 10 a.m. September 19, 2005, at St. Paul Baptist Church, Burton. Mable Goethie

BURTON - Services for Mable Goodwine Goethie, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Beaufort National Cemetery. Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home For Funerals is in charge.

Mrs. Goethie died Wednesday. Born in Beaufort County, she was a daughter of the late Gussie and Francine Robinson Goodwine.

Surviving are her husband, Edward Goethie, Sr.; sons, Benjamin, Samuel, Douglas, Edward Jr., Clifford and David Goethie, all of Beaufort; daughters, Alma Goethie of Brooklyn, N.Y., Edrina Dilligard of Beaufort; 19 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three adopted grandchildren. Elizabeth Greene
BEAUFORT - Elizabeth Patricia Snaith-Dobbie Greene, 89, widow of William Hastings Greene, died Thursday at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 until 6 PM at Copeland Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Sunday at 3 PM at St. Helena's Episcopal Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Greene was born July 28, 1914, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Cowper Dobbie in Sunderland, England. She moved to China in 1930 and was married in Shanghai, China, and moved to the United States in 1940. She has been a resident of Beaufort for over 60 years. She was a member of St. Helena's Episcopal Church and a former Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star of Port Royal. She was a founding member of the British Teasippers.

Surviving are: her son and daughter-in-law, William Hastings Greene, Jr, and his wife Nancy McPherson Greene of Beaufort; one sister, Mae Jacob of Sunderlin, England; two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Windham and Robert Peyton Greene; and one great-grandchild, Peyton Elizabeth Windham.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Helena's Episcopal Church, Post Office Box 1043, Beaufort, SC 29901. (The State - February 28, 2004)

Ella Gray

MIAMI - Services for Ella Pauline Phail Gray, 96, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Helena's Episcopal Church, with burial in the church cemetery, Beaufort. Anderson Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge.

Mrs. Gray, widow of Benjamin "Hugh" Gray, died Thursday. Born on St. Helena's Island, she was a daughter of the late Joe Phail and Ella Phail. She was one of the original Girl Scouts when the organization formed.

Surviving are her daughter, Gilda McGraw of Miami; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. (State, The (Columbia, SC) - June 20, 1999)

Arthur Greene

BEAUFORT - Services for Arthur "Jimmy" Nathaniel Greene, 98, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday January 12, 2003 at St. Helena's Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in St. Helena's Episcopal Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. today, January 11, 2003 at Copeland Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Preservation Trust for Historic St. Helena's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1043, Beaufort, SC 29901.

Mr. Greene died Thursday, January 9, 2003 in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Born December 22, 1904 in Hutchinson, Kan., he was a son of Evaline Desire Dean Greene and Arthur Ray Greene. He was educated in Norfolk, Va., public schools. He attended Elon College, where he lettered in football, and graduated in 1928 from North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) in Raleigh. While at NCSU, he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, Blue Key honor fraternity, a cheerleader and an editor of the school newspaper.

He was manager and officer at Hotel Charlotte in Charlotte. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club and past president of Mecklenburg County Boy Scouts Council, which presented him with the Silver Beaver Service Award. He served on the committee for the annual Carolinas Carousel Christmas parade. He was a charter member of Christ Episcopal Church and served on the vestry.

Upon moving to Beaufort, he managed the Sea Island Motel. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Navy League, a member of Beaufort Rotary Club, which recognized him as a Paul Harris Fellow, a board member of Kanuga Conference Center, a member of St. Helena's Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry, and served on the Beaufort County Development Board.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Virginia Elizabeth Askew Greene of Beaufort; daughter, Mary Webb Greene Keels and her husband, William, of Chester; son-in-law, Charles Saunders of Charlotte; granddaughter, Virginia Anne Saunders of Charlotte; grandsons, Charles Saunders Jr., James Saunders, both of Charlotte, William Keels of Chester; Lee Keels of Greenwood; six great-grandchildren; one niece. He was preceded in death by daughter, Virginia Ann Green Saunders, and sisters, Vinita Alzina Green Randall and Lucille Greene. (State, The (Columbia, SC) - January 11, 2003)

Nealy Faron Glaze

Owensboro, KY - Nealy Faron Glaze 33, died Wednesday.  Survivors: mother, Barbara A. Glaze; children, Jimi Maliq, Imani Maryssa and Nya Asia-Neal and other relatives. Funeral: 3 p.m., Wednesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Beaufort. Burial: Beaufort Memorial Gardens. Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home For Funerals. (Savannah Morning News (GA) - January 10, 2006)

Col. John Heyward Glover

Died...March 28th, at his residence, in Marietta, Georgia, Col. John Heyward Glover, in the 44th year of his age. Col. Glover removed from Beaufort District to Marietta, Georgia, in the spring of 1848. (The Charleston Mercury, May 3, 1858)
