Robert Eugene Mort - Retired U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Robert Eugene Mort, 74, of Beaufort died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 today in Anderson Funeral Home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Mort was born June 29, 1926, in Fairmount, WVa., a son of
Raymond E. Mort and Madie Ellen Hershberger Mort. He served in the U.S.
Marine Corps in World War II, (Iwo Jima), Korea (Chosin Reservoir) and
Vietnam. He was awarded numerous citations and commendations including
Purple Heart with two stars, Navy Commendation Medal, two Presidential
Unit Citations, seven Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, China Service
Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal,
Korean Service Medal, Korean Presidential United Citation and United
Nations Service Medal. He was employed by Atlantic Coast and Prudential insurance
companies and retired in 1989. The family suggests that those who
wish may make memorials to Gospel Light Christian Ministries Building
Fund, 607 Battery Creek Road, Beaufort, SC 29902. (Beaufort Gazette - no

Mickel PRITCHARDVILLE - Graveside services for Linda Faye Rivers Matthews, 47, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Maye River Cemetery in Bluffton. Visitation is 6:30-8 tonight at Sauls Funeral Home. Ms. Matthews died Wednesday. Born in Wilmington, N.C., she was a daughter of the late James P. Rivers and Juanita Cooler Rivers. She was a former secretary for Hilton Head High School and a member of Maye River Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughter, Brittany Matthews of Bluffton; brothers, James P. Rivers Jr. of Savannah, Terry Ford of Hardeeville; grandson, Christopher James Bevan of Bluffton. (State, The (Columbia, SC) - March 12, 1999) PORT ROYAL - Rebecca DesChamps McDowell, 83, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at River Oaks. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12, 2006, at St. Helena's Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in St. Helena's Episcopal Church Cemetery. Mrs. McDowell was born July 28, 1922, in Bishopville, South Carolina, daughter of Lois Chandler DesChamps and Claude Bradley DesChamps. She received a bachelor's degree from Winthrop College. She taught school for more than 30 years, most of which was in Beaufort County School District. She was a member of St. Helena's Episcopal Church where she was a former member of the Vestry. She was also a former member of Beaufort County Open Land Trust and a life member of Beaufort Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Gibbes McDowell. Survivors include a son, Robert Gibbes McDowell, Jr, of Beaufort; two daughters, Fraser Tabb of Greenville, Jane Kearns of Charlotte, North Carolina; a brother, Thomas DesChamps and six grandchildren. The (Columbia, SC) - March 10, 2006) Born on Hilton Head Island before there was a bridge to the mainland, she attended a one-room island school covering grades one through seven. Later, she boarded in Savannah while continuing her education. In 1990, she attended a Girl Scout Memory Day and wore the same scout uniform she had worn 58 years before. She was the widow of Fred Edward Miley Sr. and was the first resident of Magnolia Manor on the Coast. She was a member of Richmond Hill United Methodist Church and a former member of Epworth United Methodist Church. She trained as a registered nurse at Telfair Women's and Children's Hospital and retired from Candler Hospital in 1979. She was a nursing supervisor. SURVIVORS: a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Bill Traver of Savannah; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Fred E. Miley Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., and Robert W. Miley Sr. and Ann Miley of Charleston; a brother, W. Flemmon Winders Jr. of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Mildred W. Morrison of Doswell, Va.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. Friday at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.
