$1 Railroad (token)

Issued by the South Carolina Railroad Co. in 1873, this currency was good for rail travel at the rate of $1 for 25 miles! 

The $1 has a female seated at a 19th Century machine with what appears to be rigging for a sailing ship on one side of the bill and a magnificent funnel stack locomotive on the other side of the bill.

The $5, good for 125 miles of rail travel, features a side view of the same type of funnel stack, 8-wheel locomotive that appears on the $1 but placed in the center of the bill.


Issued by the State during the Civil War because of lack of coinage in circulation these include three different denominations: 10 cents, 15 cents, and 75 cents. 

They have a blue font on the front, and red on the back.
