Registration of births and deaths began in 1915.
Charleston city has earlier records, which were recently moved from
the health department in Charleston to the library there, [marriage
records began on a state basis in 1950 and are kept by the probate
judge in the county from 1911 to 1949.]
Death certificates were required beginning
January 1, 1915 [restricted from the public for fifty years] and are
held at The South Carolina State Archives [8301 Parklane Road,
Columbia, South Carolina 29223] has the certificates from 1915 to
the year before the fifty year restriction. DHEC (South Carolina
Department of Health and Environmental Control, 2600 Bull Street,

holds certificates after the fifty year restriction.
The Federal Census, Mortality Schedules for
years 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, list those persons who died during the
twelve months preceding 1 June of the census year.

You are entitled to obtain a certified copy of a
death certificate if you are:
an immediate member of the
decedent's family
a legal representative of one of
these
others who demonstrate a direct and tangible interest may
be issued copies when information is needed to determine a personal
or a property right
other applicants may be provided a statement
that the death occurred, including the date and county of
death.
You will need the full name of the deceased,
full date of death, the county of death, the deceased parents names,
your relationship with the deceased, your address and phone
number.
