I am researching my Cochran family from Hodges, SC.  The pages below are pages from a family bible showing the marriage of my great grandparents in Back Creek, N. C.  in 1884 and the birth of their children while residing in Hodges, S. C.  

My grandfather was John Wesley Cochran and he is buried in New Orleans, LA.  

His Mother, Mattie, was widowed and moved back to North Carolina and then on to  Clearwater, Florida with her three boys.  She died in Clearwater with burial place unknown.

  

This Certifies that Jno. (John) D. Cochran and Mattie C. White were United by me in Holy Matrimony in Back Creek, NC on the 7th day of May, 1884, in the presense of Everybody.  Signed J. A. Ramsey










Miss Mattie Leslie Cochran was born at 10 o'clock, Saturday morning, February 7th, 1885.

Master James Lawrence Cochran was born at half past 7 o'clock, Thursday morning, April 15, 1886.

John Wesley Cochran was born at half past 3 o'clock, Tuesday morning, March 27, 1888.

Infant daughter born and died at 9 o'clock Wednesday night, October 8th, 1890.

Donald Douglass Cochran was born at 3 o'clock, Thursday morning, June 8th, 1892.


The obituary notice below, is of Donald D., brother of John Wesley Cochran.  The obituary and bible photos were sent to me by Donald’s son, James, who is in his 80’s.

A Founding Member of Clearwater Yacht Club

CLEARWATER - Don D. Cochran Sr., one of the founding members of the Clearwater Yacht Club, died Thursday (Oct. 1, 1987) at Highland Pines Nursing Center. Clearwater. He was 95.
Mr. Cochran moved to Clearwater in 1904 from his native Hodges, S.C., and in 1920 moved to 509 Nicholson St., Clearwater, which became his permanent address.

He was the owner and operator of Don Cochran Plumbing Co. in Clearwater from 1918 until 1982.

His first plumbing job in 1918 was the Coachman Building, which is now the NCNB Building on the southeast corner of Fort Harrison Avenue and Cleveland Street in downtown Clearwater. He also worked on the Fort Harrison Hotel in downtown Clearwater, the Belleview Biltmore and the Safety Harbor Spa.

Mr. Cochran was one of the founding members of the Clearwater Yacht Club. He served as vice commodore and won many Snipe Class Regatta Championships.

Piloting his boat, the Blue Nose II, he was fleet champion at the yacht club for several years. He won several Midwinter International regattas in Clearwater and three consecutive Southeastern Snipe Regattas in Charleston, S.C. from 1938 to 1940. He was also the state regatta champion for several years in the early 1940s, winning his titles in the annual
regattas held in Tampa.

One of his sons, James W., won the National Junior Regatta Snipe Championship in 1935, and one of his grandsons, Bruce C, won the same junior championship in 1960.

Surviving him are three sons, Don Jr., Clearwater, James W., Largo, and Charles R., Tampa; five grand-children, including Bruce C, and four great-grandchildren.

Donations may be made to the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch.

Funeral services will be held for family members only.  Rhodes & Wice Funeral Directors, Druid Chapel, Clearwater, is in charge of arrangements.
