John S. Fair
Cokesbury, June 16 - John
S. Fair died at his late residence on Thursday morning in the 60th
year of his age. His remains were carried to Newberry on Friday
accompanied by his wife, his daughters, Miss Lillie and Mrs. T. N.
Gaines, and his sons, J. S. and Herndon Fair, where the interment
took place in Rosemont cemetery.
For the past 16 years Mr. Fair has been in
declining health. Five years of the time he has been a physical
wreck, and almost helpless.
Mr. Fair graduated with distinction in
Washington and Lee university in 1873. He afterwards practiced law
at Newberry with his brother-in-law, Y. J. Pope. He was for 18 years
the treasurer of the city council of Newberry, and also held the
position of trial justice, and was for eight years postmaster of
Cokesbury.
He married Miss Hannie Herndon, a daughter of
Col. B. Z. Herndon of Cokesbury, and leaves surviving him his wife
and the following children: J. Sims, Herndon and Miss Lillie Fair
and Mrs. Tn N. Gaines. ( The State -

Mrs. J. H. Eddy
Ninety-Six, Dec 2 - After an illness of nearly a year,
Mrs. J. H. Eddy passed away at her home in Ninety-Six Sunday night
and the funeral services were held yesterday, conducted by the Rev.
O. D. Jeffcoat. Mrs. Eddy had many friends throughout this
section who were grieved to hear of her death. She was 45
years of age, and is survived by six children, as follows:
Frank H. Eddy, Andy Eddy, Joseph Eddy, Allen Eddy, Davis Eddy and
Miss Louise Eddy. The following friends served as
pallberers: E. Holland, F. M. Cooper, H. P. S., R. A. Watson,
L. M. Lipscomb, G. C. Johnson. (The State, December 3,

Greenwood , Sept. 25. – Mr. Steven Elmore, next to the oldest citizen
of Greenwood , died here this morning at 10 o’clock , at his home on
Cambridge street . Mr. Elmore was 85 years old, having been married
57 years and leaves his wife, who is now 78. The internment will
take place at the public cemetery in this city tomorrow at 10
