this Memorial stood the Presbyterian meeting house, first place of
the worship in Camden after that of the Quakers. It was built about
1774 on land given by Col. Joseph Kershaw and confirmed in his will
dated 1778. The first building was destroyed by the British and
rebuilt after the revolution. In 1805, a third church was erected
here and called Bethesda, which was used until the present church on
DeKalb St. was built in 1820-1822, this land was given by the
Presbyterians to the cemetery association in 1915. Marker erected
by the Cemetery Assoc of Camden 1954.

to the memory of William Ancrum who died Stokes Co, NC on
the 31st day of July 1831 in his 60th yr of
life, his remains were afterwards moved to this place, which had
long been the scene of his residence and deposited in his family
cemetery and disposition amiable conciliating and benevolent in
manners
--able and
engaging in his inner course with the mankind honorable upright and
sincere, he was deservedly and esteemed in life lamented in death to
all who know him in all the relations of life he was conscientious
and exemplary; an affectionate husband, an indulgent parent, a
faithful friend and a kind master, for many years he was by public
possession a Christian and a ruling elder in the Presbyterian church
in his department he duly, he felt his responsibility and endeavored
to all worthy of his high vocation. “In Memory of“, the just is

to the memory of Elizabeth Ancrum, consort of Wm. Ancrum
of Camden who departed this life on Sept 1826 aged 41 year and 10
months, as a wife she was a loving and beloved as a mother, kind,
tender and affectionate. possessing wealth her hands were, ever
ready to administer to the necessity of the poor, her house was a
home, for the friendless and the stranger; as a friend she was true
and faithful, she departed this life resting on the merits of her
redeemer. Revelations 11:13

Glasgow 1760-1780 here sleeps Agnes of Glasgow who traditions says
followed her lover, of the British army, across the ocean and
through the wilderness to Camden. She was taken by death before she
found him and buried here at night by King Haigler and his men.’

Alexander, Joseph K May 8, 1838-Feb 4, 1854 He came to death by the
accidental discharge of his gun engaged in sports. This stone was
erected by his sorrowing schoolmates as a tribute to his sterling
worth. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and among his last
words were “Jesus is precious to my soul”.

Many
patriots were executed in Camden during 1780-1781. Those known
appear on the monument. Hundreds of patriots from Delaware,
Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia died in Kershaw County in the
battle of Camden on the 16th of Aug 1780 and Hob Kirk
Hill Apr 25, 1781. Enlisted soldiers killed were left upon the
fields and buried in graves known only to God. Erected by Gen.
Thomas Sumter Chapter, Sons of the Revolution; Dedicated April 2,
1994 by US Sen. Strom Thurmond; This plague donated by Mulberry
Plantation to honor John Chesnut, Col SC Militia, Capt 3 SC
