Ashcraft This Indenture made this 26th day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty nine between John Scarborough of Lancaster District of the one part and Joel Ashcraft of Chester District of the other part witnesseth, The said John Scarborough on his part for the consideration hereinafter mentioned bargains sells and conveys unto the said Joel Ashcraft the following property to wit: One tract of land containing three hundred acres more or less situate in the District first aforesaid bounded on the East by Big Lynches Creek which said tract is made up of several parcels one parcel conveyed by Edward Burch to the said John Scarborough and one conveyed by the Sheriff of Lancaster to the same and one conveyed by William Scarborough to the same and being the same tract or parcel of land whereon the John Scarborough now resides and has resided for many years: One negro man named Alfred about thirty eight years of age ~ one negro girl named Molly about eight years of age, all the stock of cattle horses and hogs and all the Household and Kitchen furniture now on said premises: To have and to hold all the said property both real and personal, to the Said Joel Ashcraft his heirs and assigns forever, and the said John Scarborough doth hereby bind himself his heirs and assigns to warrant and forever defend the said property to the said Joel Ashcraft his heirs and assigns against himself and his heirs and assigns and all persons claiming under him ~ and whereas the said John Scarborough is indebted to the said Joel Ashcraft for services rendered and money expended in and about the business of the said John Scarboroughs to the amount of five hundred Dollars; and whereas the said John Scarborough is very aged and infirmed and incapable of taking care of himself and where a Judgment for costs for about the sum of two hundred Dollars remains unpaid against the said John; now the said Joel Ashcraft in consideration of the above conveyances doth agree to raise the sum of two hundred Dollars to pay off said Judgments and doth also covenant and agree to take of and support the said John Scarborough from that[?] until the time of his death: and for that purpose dothe agree to hire and employ some[?] Person to live on said plantation and on said plantation to take care of and suport the said John Scarborough in all such things as may be necessary for his support and comfort in his old age: and if necessary to hire one or more nurses to attend to the the said John Scarborough and that said John is not to be removed from the hous on said premises, but is to be taken care of and supported in said House, where he has been used to live: and the said Joel Ashcraft does also acknowledge full satisfaction of all indebtedness of the said John to himself, and doth hereby bind himself his heirs, administrators and assigns to perform all the above covenanty above stated ~ In testimony whereof the parties have hereunto set their hands and
seals the day and year above written.
