pg. 385-386 Eldridge Tracy McSwain, Cross Hill, S.C., of Scotch descent, the son of the Rev. W. A. McSwain, of M.E. Church, South, was born in Stanley co., N.C., June 30th, 1836. Educated at the Charleston high school, and in the med. coll. of South Carolina. He graduated M.D. from the latter institution in March 1859, and in the same year established himself in practice in New Market, Abbeville Co., S.C. Upon the breaking out of the war in 1861 he entered the Confederate army as an asst. surg., and until 1865 was constantly engaged in active service, save while a prisoner. In Feb. 1865, he was promoted to be surgeon, and acted as brigade surgeon until close of war. Is a member of Laurens co. med. soc. He married, for a second time, Oct. 28th, 1869, Janie, daughter of John J McGowan, Esq., of Cross Hill, S.C.
