Born in South Carolina.
Descendant of Capt. Samuel Martin, of North Carolina.
Daughter of Rev. William Martin and Margaret Maxwell, his wife.
Granddaughter of James Martin and Margaret Kerr, his wife.
Gr.-granddaughter of Samuel Martin and Margaret McCurdy, his wife.
Samuel Martin, in 1775, served in the Snow Campaign, and went to the relief of Charleston in 1780. He was in command of a company at Cowan's Ford, Eutaw Springs, and King's Mountain.   He lived to the remarkable age of 104.

Elizabeth Steele, when Gen. Greene, hard pressed by Cornwallis, was retreating with his starved and penniless troops, not only gave them food, but what was of greatest importance, brought the despondent General two bags of specie, which relieved immediate needs and gave assurance of a good woman's willingness to sacrifice all for her country.

Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of John Gregg and Eleanor Gregg, his wife.
John Gregg was a valiant patriot and active in the fierce warfare between Whigs and Tories.
James Gregg was a captain when Charleston fell, and suffered much from his Tory neighbors.
Evander McIver was a private, and his wife was at the side of her brother, a brave officer, when their home was surrounded by Tories and he was killed before he could surrender.

James Witherspoon was captain of the "King's Tree Company" under Gen. Francis Marion. When that officer sent his commission he wrote. "Our country calls for men of bravery and ability such as you are."

Mrs. Sarah Susannah MacMurphy Adams. 3267

Widow of John Marsh Adams.
Descendant of Col. James Martin, Capt. Sherwood Bugg, and Daniel MacMurphy, all of Georgia.
Daughter of George Galphin Archibald Tonille MacMurphy and Keziah Paris Martin, his wife.
Granddaughter of James Martin and Obedience Bugg, his wife ; Daniel MacMurphy and Susannah Crossley, his wife.
Gr.-granddaughtcr of Sherwood Bugg and Elizabeth Hobson, his wife.
James Martin and his six brothers were in the internal warfare, and in 1781 he was colonel of Richmond county militia.
Sherwood Bugg was captain of infantry in Jackson's Legion, and at his plantation, near Augusta, the wounded from the battles at that place were nursed during the Revolution.
Daniel MacMurphy, after the siege of Savannah, belonged to the patriots that formed themselves into a body called the " General Assembly."

Daughter of William Walker Alexander and Mary Augusta Bishop, his wife.
Granddaughter of Thomas Williamson Alexander and Martha Walker, his wife.
Gr.-granddaughter of John Alexander and M. Williamson, his wife.
Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of William Williamson John Alexander with his three brothers joined the "Tiger Irish Company" and fought in the battles led by the brave Gen. Francis Marion.
William Williamson, in 1776, commanded the troops that checked the invasion of the Tories and Cherokees. This success diffused military ardor and transformed the planters, merchants and mechanics into an active militia

John Murff (1750-81), was a gallant soldier, serving both in infantry and cavalry during the revolutionary war, and was killed at the battle of Cowpens. He was born in South Carolina.

Nathan Evans, in 1778, served as private in Col. Walters' regiment. He was born in Craven County; died in Marion County, S. C.
William Baker (1739-1823), served as a private in the cavalry under Col. Wade Hampton, and was at the battle of Eutaw Springs. He was born in Craven County; died in Marion County, S. C.

William Wilkie (1763-98), served as lieutenant of South Carolina militia, was wounded at Savannah. He was born in Charleston; died in Morris Island.

Gr-granddaughter of Jacob Wannamaker and Anne Rumph, his wife.
Jacob Wannamaker served with the Partisan Rangers in the regiment commanded by Col. William Russel Thompson.
His company defended the District from marauding bands of Tories and protected the property of Whigs. In 1780 in a  skirmish with bloody Bill Cunningham, he killed the lieutenant of Cunningham's company. He was born and died in Orangeburg.

Joseph James Scott was lieutenant when severely wounded at the battle of Black Mingo in an engagement with the Tories where, being outnumbered, half of Marion's men were wounded.

Gr-gr-granddaughter of George Cogdell and Mary Elizabeth W. Stevens, his wife.
George Cogdell (1750-1800), served as captain in the 5th regiment South Carolina Provincial forces. Continental line, 1775.  He was horn and died in South Carolina.

MISS EMILY BEATTIE AUSTIN. 50126

Daughter of Dr. Thomas Collins Austin and Mary Turner James, his wife.
Granddaughter of William Austin and Jane Collins, his wife; John James and Jane Turner, his wife.
Gr-granddaughter of Thomas James and Mary Jones, his wife; Thomas Collins and Rosa Dodd, his wife.
Thomas Collins (1729-96) was a Whig, of Spartanburg County, and while ill in bed was attacked by the bloody Bill Cunningham with his band of Tories. His three sons, John, William, and Richard, were in the army, and when he refused to tell where they were the Tories hacked him with
their swords, leaving him for dead.
Also No. 12200.
Thomas James (1755-79) volunteered in a regiment of Virginia troops which went to South Carolina, and was killed at the battle of Stono, 1779.  He was born in Virginia.
William Austin (1755-1840) was a daring scout and was engaged in the battles of Gilford Court House, Musgrove Mills and Kettle Creek. He was born in Virginia; died in Greenville, S. C.
