Lutheran Visitor 7/28/1876 page 2; From a letter written by E. J. Dreher to the Lutheran Visitor: “Dr. Smeltzer seems to think the prospects of Newberry College at Walhalla for the next season are encouraging. I hope the brightest anticipations of the doctor in regard to the College may be more than realized.  Others have grave fears that they will not be.  The Board of Trustees have in my judgment virtually abandoned the College.  The convention of the Church which was held in the summer in the interest of the College was too thinly attended to inspire any enthusiasm.  The time of meeting and circumstances under which it met were peculiarly unfavorable.  All this may have been unavoidable but it is nevertheless true.  I hope no one will become offended at me for being plain and candid.  Nothing can be gained by shutting our eyes to the real truth of our condition.  We must look it squarely in the face and act accordingly.” Lutheran Visitor 9/1/1876 page 2

NEWBERRY COLLEGE – Rev. H. S. Wingard wrote an article ‘OUR COLLEGE’. In it he complained that the Board of Trustees transact all their business in the dark.  His article objected to the problems of the College being brought to the public’s attention in the manner in which it was done.  He felt that the Synod should have been presented the charges prior to the situation being made public.  It is wrong for Bro. Honour to make charges without having them properly sustained. Rev. E. A. Wingard wrote a lengthy article on a letter he had written to co-editor Dr. Dosh giving his private views concerning the success of the endowment of the Bachman professorship at Newberry College.  Without his permission these views were made public. An article proclaiming the opening of the present session with a bright look ahead in the future of the school. An article on “Let Us Have Peace” – what happened during the war to the finances of the College can be looked into by the Synod. There will be a thorough review of the financial condition of the College at present and the coming SC Synod can more fully determine the condition of the College as it stands. In the meantime let us stop the ‘stone throwing’. Lutheran Visitor, 10/2/1874, page 2 & 10/9/1874, page 2; the plan to endow the Bachman chair at Newberry College is to be continuously and vigorously prosecuted and as promptly as possible in all the congregations and Pastorates of the Synod. Lutheran Visitor 4/9/1875, page 2; a lengthy article written on the ineptness of the Board of Trustees of Newberry College. The five-year scholarships will be finished in 1875 and no further income will be derived from them. No adequate Endowment Fund has been secured.  Only a few thousand dollars has been raised for the Bachman chair. There is an indifference and neglect of the burden that is borne by a few.  In June the Board of Trustees stated they were turning over the College to the professors and that henceforth it must be self-sustaining. In order to secure a success we will have to retain the number of students we now have and receive considerable accessions of those who are able to pay tuition in the higher departments of the College or the present faculty will have to work at greatly reduced salaries. At present the institution is in a prosperous condition.  There are 101 students enrolled.  However only about 85 had attended during the entire year.  Of these only 32 are in the College department and the remainder equally divided between senior and junior classes of the preparatory department.  The four professors salaries are $3400 a year and tuition only amounts to $2600 a year.
