Death of C. K. Johnston, Esq. It becomes our painful duty, says the N. O. Commercial Times, to record the death of our late respected and talented fellow-citizen, Charles K. Johnston, Esqr., formerly of S. C. It appears that Mr. Johnston left this city on Saturday evening, in the 6 o'clock train for the Lake. He then went on board the steamer Yazoo, on a pleasure trip for the Bay of St. Louis. A little before supper time and about two hours after they had left the lake shore, he went into the wheelhouse to have a shower bath, from the water driven up by the wheel; he came out two or three times, having when in, held by the door which he was cautioned to keep open and hold. The last time he went in, he shut the door, and it had not been so two minutes, when a gentleman, who was outside waiting for his turn, opened it and Mr. Johnston was not to be seen. The alarm was immediately given and the boat was stopped, but too late; he had fallen through a hole and disappeared forever.

Hugh O'Neall, the second son of William O'Neall, and his wife Mary Frost, was born 10th of June 1767, on Mudlick, [p.69] Laurens District, S. C. When a boy his father removed near the mill, on Bush River, now the property of Dr. Bobo, and which by the will of his father was devised to the subject of this sketch. He there spent the early part of his life. In his boyhood (during the Revolutionary war), he managed the grist mill for his father, and there stored his mind and memory, with the rich fund of Revolutionary anecdote, for which he was so remarkable. From his marriage in '92, to 1800, he managed for himself the mill. In that year, he began the mercantile business, and continued it with the interval of perhaps one year to 1810 (June or July), when in the Providence of God, he became a lunatic and while in that condition, his estate was sacrificed by the folly of his creditors, and his wife and children (one son and four daughters) left penniless. In 1813 (July) he was fully restored to reason, and from that time until within a few years of his death his mind, memory and understanding were just as vigorous and correct as they ever were… In 1820, he became an inmate in the family of his son, who had just settled at Springfield, the late residence of his maternal grandmother, Hannah Kelly (deceased)… He was born, ralsed, lived and died in the Society of Friends.…

This collection of marriage and death notices from Columbia newspapers is a continuation of Brent Holcomb's earlier Marriage and Death Notices from Columbia, SC, Newspapers, 1792-1839. Taken largely from The South-Carolinian, the notices in this database come from a variety of sources, including the Palmetto-State Banner and the Columbia Banner. With over 8000 names, it covers not only the counties of Richland and Lexington, but also contains notices from Orangeburg, Lancaster and Georgetown. In addition, because it is the state capital, some notices from around the state, outside these five counties, can be found in this database.
