The Senior Class
Senior Class1

Richard Earl Addison "Runt, "Puny, "Fat" - "Better late than never."
Junior International Relations Club '38-'39; Blue Print Club '39-'40; Senior International Relations Club '39-'40.
You have been a good sport for four years and we will miss that smile on your face, especially when someone is having fun at your expense.

John William Anderson "Jackie" - "Watch well your beginnings, and results will manage themselves."
Classical Club '37-'38; Junior International Relations club; Boys' Choir; Mixed Chorus; The Block "N" Club; Chemistry Club; Treasurer of Class; Tennis Team; The National Beta Club; Assistant Editor-in-Chief of The Newberry Cordial; Algebra Contestant; Honoroable Mention in the Thirteenth Annual High School Contest on the League of Nations.
For Jackie we predict a brilliant future.  Wherever he is you will find a square-shooter, a clean player, and a steady worker.  For such a record is he leaving behind him, a most outstanding friend to those who know him.  You can always count on Jack in whatever is right and honest.  Jack is an interested and interesting student in Art, and gives promise of developing into a successful commercial artist.

Leonard Ariail Auton "Lendy" - "If worry were the cause of death, I would live forever."
Kast Club '36; Junior International Relations Club '37; Baseball '38-'39; Football '38-'39; We Fix "Em Club '37-'38; Senior International Relations Club '40; "N" Club '40.
Leonard has been one of those who gave his time toward anything that might better the school.  Always ready and willing to help his classmates or his teachers in any way.  He is one of our most dignified seniors.

Wingard Berry - "Truthfulness and honesty, only to God I had a little more."
We Fix "Em Club '36-'38; International Relations Club '40.
Wingard never hesitates to help a pal if it is in his power to do so.  He is a friend to all, an enemy to none.  He has worked hard and we wish for him lost of luck and a very happy success.

Mary Ruth Betchman - "Leave silence to the saints - I am but human."
Sewing Club '37; Cooking Club '38; International Relations Club '39; Secretary of the Biology Club '40.
Mary is an attractive, likeable brunette with a very pleasing personality.  She is always ready for fun and frolic.  She has gained many friends during her high school career and has been able to keep them by her winning ways.  We all predict for her a brilliant future.

Dorothy Mae Boozer "Dot" - "Don't do today what can be done tomorrow."
Sewing Club '37; Cooking Club '38.
It is needless to say that "Dot' has a grand personality, because all that know her have found it out and those who don't know "Dot" would soon find it out if they knew her.  Her green eyes always give you a warm and tender look even when "the going is tough."  She is as gay as a New Year's party, as pleasant as dew drops and is a friend whom everyone admires.

Elizabeth Boozer "Lib" - "Leave silence to the saints - I am but human."
Sewing Club '37; Cooking Club '38; Latin '38-'39-'40.
"Lib" is a good and faithful student; pretty.  She has such a good disposition that you can't help loving her.  She is very dependable and conscientious, always doing her part well in the activities of the school.  May success crown your efforts "Lib."

Mayer Bouknight "Bouk" - "Where there's a will, there's a way."
Chemistry Club; Physics Club.
"Bouk" has made many friends during his four-year stay at Newberry High.  Not the least of his many admirable qualities contributing to this end have been his ready smile and keen sense of humor.  We wish him success and happiness to accompany it.

Senior Class2

Rosemary Bowers, "Rosebud," "Butch" - "What the world is to us depends on what we are ourselves."
Classical Club '36-'40, Censor '39-'40; Glee Club, '37-'40; President '39-'40; National Beta Club '38-'40; Mixed Chorus, '37-'40 President '39-'40; Junior I.R.C. '39, President '39; Senior I.R.C. '40; "N" Club '39; State High School Latin Contest - Rating Excellent '39; Editor-in-Chief of The Newberry CORDIAL '39-'40 State High school Chorus '37-'40; Most Intellectual Girl '40; Most Reliable Girl '40; D.A.R. Representative for N.H.S. '40.
Dainty, poised, sociable, dignified, lovely and reliable, are fit adjectives to describe Rosemary.  That everyone thinks highly of her was shown when the Senior Class elected her D.A.R. representative.  Although "Rosebud doesn't enter athletics actively, she is a loyal supporter of the teams.  This girl has distinguished herself as a good leader and an excellent student.

Marjorie Cannon "Margie" - "Discourage no one, encourage all."
Sewing Club '36-'37' Cooking Club 37-'38.
We all know you by your courage to stand for what is right.  And for your helping hand to all fellow students.

Dalton Odell Carpenter, Jr. "Carp," "Lefty," "Sugar Babe," "Sweetie Pie" - "Listen to everyone, then do as you please."
Football '36-'37-'38-'39; Basketball '40; Baseball '37-'38-'39-'40; Chemistry Club '38; "N" Club '40; Associate Editor of Newberry CORDIAL '40; Boy Scout Club '37; Hi-Steppers '40; Female Detesters Club '39; "Bull Shooters" '39; We Fix 'Em Club '37-'38; Absolute Order of Bernoulli Worshippers '40; Invitation committee '40; Athletic Editor of ORACLE '40.
N.H.S. has known lady-killers, and it has known many a good "fella", but seldom has it boasted of one who so thoroughly combined the talents of both.  Some say "Sugar Babe" fiddlers his time away, but such activities as football, basketball, baseball,  ORACLE CORDIAL and "affaires de coeur" dub him a typical self, his friends will know that their prediction of a successful life will come true.

William Jacob Chapman, "Red," "Senator" - "If at first you don't succeed, keep on suc-ing til you do succeed."
International Relations Club '40.
Billy lives by his motto.  He is a friendly, hard-working boy.  Billy is always willing to take his share of any responsibility placed upon him.  He industrious nature will win him much success.

Gilder Huiet Clary "Cow," "George Oscar," "Reubinoff," "Lone Moose" - "With all the women in this little old world, I ought to get a least one."
Bull Shooters '39; We Fix "Em '37-'38-'39; Chemistry '39; Boy Scout '38; Blue Print Club '40; Physics '40.
Huiet has what we call a scientific mind, but it can still wander to thoughts of love, etc.  We all know where he will go when the summer months roll around and that is Miami.  There was a report out that he had taken the final step, but we know better.

Lydie Strother Clary, "Butch" - "Life is yours, make of it what you will."
Junior I.R.C. '39; Latin Club '37-'38
A cheery "hello" - and it's Lydie behind the "voice with a smile."  Noted for her friendliness, Lydie also has the reputation of being courteous and dependable.  She has never failed to be a loyal friend.  "Butch" has already begun making her mark in the world.

Arthur Franklin Cochcroft "Ott" - "If worry were the only cause of death, I would live forever."
Football '38-'39-'40; Shop Club '37; We Fix "Em Club '38; "N" Club '40; I.R.C. '39.
Arthur, know to his friends - and he has many of them - as "Ott" is a quiet, unassuming chap.  He is rarely elated by his good fortune or downcast by his troubles.  He is that rare combination of a good student, a good "fella," a good athlete, and a ladies' man (the last he strongly denies).

Hugh Hamilton Connelly "Buck, "Bruno" - "Better late than never."
Chemistry Club; Scot Club; Women-Haters' Club; Manger of Baseball '38-'39; Basketball '38; I.R.C.; royal Order of Worshippers.
We have never seen "Buck when he was not in a good humor.  Interesting in a "bull session," helpful to all, he has many friends.  Students and teachers respect his keen, analytical mind - even though its ability is not always used to secure good grades.

Senior Class 3

Richard Cook "Skeet" - Richard is a good student, a hard worker and best of all, a true friend.  Although he has never played on any of the teams he has always been present on all occasions to cheer the team through thick or thin.

Jean Blakely Copeland "Little Jobe," "Snooky," "Little Copey" - "A good laugh is worth a thousand frowns in any market."
Secretary of Class '37-'38-'39-'40; Class Sponsor '39; Sewing Club '37; Cooking Club '38; Big Apple Club '38; Old Maids' Club '39; Hi-Steppers Club '40; Absolute Order of Bernoulli Worshippers '40; Miss Senior '40; Best-Dressed Girl '40; Prettiest '40; Subscription Manger, ORACLE, '40.
Jean, we wish for you those thousands of laughs and few frowns.  And when you have passed on beyond these learned halls we will miss that cute little smile and pleasant disposition of yours.

Mary Nell Corley "Polly" - "Have your fun now, you aren't young but once."
Latin Club '36-'37; Sewing Club '34-'35; Cooking Club '35-'36.
Not knowing what the future has in store for her, but success must be attained, so we leave it up to Polly to prove to us there is a higher goal.  Always faun-loving and has won many friends during her years at high school.

Dorothy Alice Counts "Dottie" - "Speech is silver, silence is gold."
The Classical Club '37-'38; The Betta Club '39-'40.
Dorothy is always quiet and very dependable.  She is very serious in her work and never fails to do her duty.  Her future is bound to be filled with success.  She is a true friend to everyone.

Pauline Elizabeth Counts "Polly" - "The motto of wisdom is - serve all but love only one."
Good-natured, free from worry, and unselfish; these are her out-standing characteristics.  Polly's willingness to help both students and faculty and her thoughtfulness of other people have made her many sincere friends, who wish for her a happy and successful future, which she deserves.

Helen Louise Cromer "Squeeky" - "Tout ce qui reluit n'est pas or - All that glitters is not gold."
Junior I.R.C. '39; Senior I.R.C. '40; Cooking Club '38; Sewing Club '37.
Louise always has a smile for everyone.  She has won many friends by her courtesy, good nature and kindness.  She has combined traits of ability and dependability.  We wish for her much happiness and great success in whatever she may do.

Sara Leona Cromer "Sally Ann," "Sa" - "If worry were the only cause of death, I'd live forever."
International Relations Club, 10th and 11th Grades.
Sara is a sweet, quiet, truthful and lovable girl of strong character.  Her kindness and loyalty have won for her many friends in Newberry High School.  We wish her much success and happiness in the future.

Tommy Cromer "Crom" - "Spend your money, have a good time, and sleep in the streets."
Football '37-'38-'39; Basketball '36-'37-'38; Baseball '36-'37-'38.
Carefree and happy-go-=lucky has always been Tommy's disposition, but underneath it all, we know he has a heart of gold and many a serious thought.
