The Senior Class
Senior10

Elvira Shealy "Bidie" - "To hurry and worry is not my creed. Things will happen - so what's the need."
Sewing Club '37; Cooking Club '38; Latin Club '37; Treasurer of Biology Club '40.
Did anyone mention the name of a tall, blue-eyed blonde?  Of course, you mean "Bidie," that charming, vivacious lass with a merry twinkle in her eye.  Sense of humor? - but definitely, and also a sparkling wit tuned for a quick comeback to anything that may happen along.  Never a worry has this good-natured senior.  Why, yes, she is even a bit flirtatious at times, as anyone can tell you. But she doesn't neglect her studies altogether, for you see that she learned to cook and sew and even rated the Latin Club.  A good sport and a pleasing personality - that's "Bidie."

Ernestine Shealy "Totsie" - "Better late than not at all."
Sewing Club '37; Cooking Club '38; Biology Club '40.
Ernestine is a good student and will be missed at Newberry High.  We wish her much success in life.  She has many friends who predict for her a happy life in her future venture.

Mildred Shealy "Mickey" - "Be what you are and not what you want to be."
Sewing Club '37; Cooking Club '38; Latin Club '38; Biology Club '40.
Mildred is a very likeable person.  She has many friends at Newberry High.  We predict a bright future for her.  She is a real friend and everyone is fond of her.

Ruth Merle Shealy - "The only way to have a friend is to be one."
Home Economics '37-'38; Biology Club '40.
Ruth Merle is a good-natured, unselfish, fun-loving and cheerful girl.  She has a great sense of humor and always looks on the brighter side of life.  Her charming personality has won her many friends.  We wish for her success in the future.

George Jacob Sligh, Jr. "Oscar," "G.J." - "Contentment is better than riches."
We Fix 'Em Club '38-'39; Junior I.R.C. '39; Female-Detesters '39; Chemistry Club '39; Physics Club '40.
Meekness is his middle name, and George has been able to get by with a great deal due to his meekness, especially with his teachers.  We wish for you success and lots of it.

Charles Smith, Jr. "Charlie" - "Tout ce qui reluit n'est pas or-"
Chemistry club '39; Junior I.R.C. '39; We Fix 'Em Club '38-'39; Physics Club '40.
"Charlie" is a very quiet, good-natured boy.  He is especially smart in his studies and nearly always leads the class.  "Charlie" always has a good word for a boy who is worried about a test and is always willing to help him.  We wish for "Charlie" many more years of leading his classes and may he always have a happy, abundant life.

Henry Hubert Snipes "Hub" - "Better late than never."
Hubert is a good fellow.  He always seems to be in a good humor and is willing to help anyone at any time.  We wish for him a happy future.

Jane Harriet Summer "2-Ton" - "Tomorrow will be another day."
Classical Club '37-'38-'39-'40; First Consul '40; Beta Club '39-'40; I.R.C. '39-'40; Secretary '40; Staff of Newberry CORDIAL ;40.
A sly grin, a witty remark, a wicked gleam in a pair of green eyes, a cocked head topped with a mass of brown curls and you have Jane, everybody[s friend.  This talented gal has a flair with a pen and a love of poetry and books.  "2-Ton" manages to mix very well her lessons and her numerous heart affairs.  Jane's sincerity and interest in people have caused her to become a reg'lar Dotty Dix for all of her co-ed pals.  Such a good ole girl as she is destined to go far, whether in matrimony or a career, who can tell?

Senior 12

James R. Swygert, Jr. "Swag" - "Here today, gone tomorrow."
Chemistry Club '39; Scout Club '38; International Relations Club '40.
James came to Newberry High very meek and quiet, and leaves us this year the same, other than having acquired more dignity and the best of manners.  We will miss you when you are gone, and above all the honesty which you stood for.

Joseph Walter Taylor, Jr. "Joe" - "Listen to everyone; then do as you please."
Football  "B" '37; Baseball "B" '37; Varsity Football '38; Baseball '39; Block "N" Club '40.
Joe has a winning personality for everybody.  He has played his share in athletics.  And won his place in football.  Well liked by the student body and faculty we predict for Joe a happy future.  Although he is married he is still the cutest one for the girls.

Oberta Thrift Taylor "Bert", "Red" - "Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow!"
Man-Haters Club '39; Sewing Club '37; Cooking Club '38.
"They always get their man" - the motto of Uncle Sam's G-Men - or maybe you mean "Bert" for she also knows the meaning of that - you see she got hers too.  All kidding aside, "Bert" is a very likeable person, easy to make friends and keep them.  She has a sunny disposition and knows how to take things on the chin.  Though not very fond of studying she is witty and always ready for fun.

Genevieve Houseal Thomasson "Andy" - "If worry were the cause of death, I would live forever."
The Royal Order of Bernoulli Worshippers '40; Classical Club '37-'38; Basketball '38-'39, '39-'40; Glee Club '36-'37, '37-'38, '38-'39; Mixed Chorus '37-'38.
"Andy" is a dependable, likeable girl with a very sweet disposition.  The fact that she is captain of the basketball team proves that she is a lover of sports.  She enjoys a good time and has fun wherever she goes.  Her pleasing personality has won for her many friends during her four years at Newberry High.  Much success to you in the future "Andy".

Paralee Turner - "Be prepared at all times."
Sewing Club '37; Cooking '38; Biology '40.
Paralee is one girl that likes to have fun, even at school, and especially in Study Hall.  Her twinkling dar eyes denote a keen sense of humor.  She is faithful to her friends and will be cruel to enemies if she has any, which we doubt.  After seeing her with several seniors in one day you know that she is well liked by the male of the species, though she is not fickle where the one and only is concerned.  We predict success for her in whatever she undertakes.

Perry Watson Turner "Perry Winkle" - "Give to the world the best you have."
Football '39-'40; "N" Club.
"Perry Winkle" has been one who causes as much trouble as his namesake in the funny paper.  But we all like him a lot and wish for him a life of success and happiness.

Cam Davis Wallace - "You may glean knowledge by reading but you must separate the chaff from the wheat by thinking."
Latin Club '36; Cheer Leader '37-'38-'39-'40; American Legion County Oratorical Contest '37; State Declamation Contest '38; Junior I.R.C. '39; Senior I.R.C. '40 Chemistry Club '39; "N" Club '40; Business Manager of CORDIAL.
Cam has for four years been a big asset to Newberry High, excelling in oratory and once winning the State contest.  He studies - how much?  We won't go very far into that, but whatever the occasion may be, Cam is always willing to help.  Right now he has his eye on West Point and we hope he goes far in the field of success.  So in the future we will salute you, General Wallace.

Frances Greneker Wallace - Classical Club '37-'38; Beta Club '39-'40, Vice-President, '40; I.R.C. '39-'40, President, '40; CORDIAL Staff '40; "B" Team BAsketball '40; Chemistry Club '39.
Frances - a lovable lass with winning ways and a scintillating smile.  As a typical co-ed should, she enters whole-heartedly into all curricular and extra-curricular activities, such as studies, clubs, athletics, dances - and dates.  fannie has a "Rep" as a swellegant jitterbug and grand all-round chum.  For her there is nothing but success and loads of friends in the years to come.

Senior11

Etta Irene Wessinger "Rena" - "Make the best better."
Glee Club '38-'39.
Kindness and good manners are personified in Irene.  Never so busy that she can't stop and give a fellow student a helping hand.

Henry Burton Wells, III - "Better late than never."
Scout Club '37-'38-'39-'40; Royal Order of Bernoulli Worshippers '40; Basketball "B" Team '37; Bull-Shooters '39.
The monotony of some fifteen different classrooms has failed to dent the rugged individuality of Henry Burton the Third.  His love for things mechanical is balanced only by his dislike for things mathematical and literary.  His many friends know that success will be his in the future.

Sophie Elizabeth Way "Midget," "Dimples" - "Anything worth fighting for is worth having."
Home Economics Club '37-'38; Man-Haters Club '39; Biology Club '40.
Meek as a little mouse, never making her presence known.  someone has said that meekness is one of life's virtues.  She has a great sense of humor and is always ready to have a good time.  She has a charming personality and has won many friends during her years in high school.  We wish the best of luck to you, Sophie.

Henry Grady White, Jr. "White" - "Better late than never."
Kast Club '38.
Take your time, old boy, and everything will come through okay.  But sometimes we miss a lot by being late.

Ralph Perry Zobel "Zob," "Switchblade," Mayor of Helena" - "Fool them all and 'love' just one."
We Fix 'Em Club '38-'39; The Royal Society of Mexican Bull Throwers '39.
You have done a pretty good job of fooling them all.  But how about loving just one.  We wish for you all the success that comes your way, and may your life be filled with happiness.
