Leona Hazel
Lena Murrell Hazel, 78, of Newberry, widow of Leland Hazel, died Monday, August 17, 2009 at Lowman Home.  Born on August 22, 1930 in Edgefield, she was a daughter of the late Tolbert and Frances Covington Murrell. Mrs. Hazel was a former employee of Newberry Mills and a member of Faith Assembly of God.  Surviving are sons, Raymond Costello and Larry Hazel both of Newberry; a daughter, Patsy B. Lindler of Chapin; sisters, Dorothy Owens and Linda Walker both of Johnston; brothers, Charles Murrell of Edgefield, Monty Murrell of Aiken, Wayne Murrell, Jerry Murrell and Johnny Murrell of Johnston; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Mitchel Burriss and Rev. Gary Lyerly. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 – 8 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Ethel Harrelson
Ethel May Wright Harrelson, of Prosperity, died August 3, 2009, in Conway. Born February 28, 1918, in Spring Hope NC, she was the only daughter and youngest child of the late Arthur A. and Bertha Crawford Wright.  Mrs. Harrelson graduated from Hallsboro High School in 1935. She and the late James Jason Harrelson were married on June 9, 1940, in Conway. The marriage lasted 63 years, until his death on July 17, 2003.  During their marriage, they lived in Whiteville NC, and Charleston, Florence, and Barnwell SC. They retired to Prosperity where they enjoyed fishing on Lake Murray and traveling throughout the US and Canada.  Mrs. Harrelson was an excellent seamstress, gardener, hunter, fly fisherman, Atlanta Braves fan and critic, and cook. She grew up during the Depression and as a result, there was always much more on the table than anyone could possibly eat. She was never satisfied until everyone was full. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.  She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands; Kay and J.W. Peagler, of Bonneau, Jay and Ted Scott, of Leesville, and Linda and Boyd Gainey, of Conway; two granddaughters; Karen P. Capps and Wanda P. Mayfield, and six grandsons who will serve as pallbearers; David, Tommy, Ron, and Jason Scott, Kevin Peagler, and William Gainey; 15 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves a dreadful parrot, named Polly.  Her brothers, Granville, Freeman, Philip, Olin, Howald, Arthur, Pembroke, Kenneth, and a great-granddaughter, Chelsea Armstrong, preceded her in death...contributed by Donna Brummett

William C. Hawkins Jr.
Funeral services for William Charles "Chuck" Hawkins, Jr., 65, were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Union United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Colony Lutheran Church in Newberry. Born in Quantico, VA on September 12, 1945, Mr. Hawkins was the son of William Charles Hawkins and the late Katie Mills Hawkins. He was a graduate of Clemson University where he was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha. He served in the US Army from 1968 to 1970. Mr. Hawkins had owned his current company since 1972. He was passionate about golf, and all things Clemson!  Mr. Hawkins is survived by his father; daughter, Amye Hawkins Caldwell (Arnie); son, William Charles "Cee" Hawkins, III; brothers, Dr. Michael Mills Hawkins (Candi) and James Clifton Hawkins (Sherry); sister, Katherine Hawkins Weeks (Tommy); grandson, JD Cromer; granddaughter, Julia Cromer and special friend, Brenda Waites. Katie Hawkins
Services for Katie "Kitty" Mills Hawkins, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Union United Methodist Church, Irmo, with burial to follow in Colony Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Newberry. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 29, 2002, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Homes, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel.  Mrs. Hawkins, wife of William Charles Hawkins, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002. Born in Prosperity, she was a daughter of the late Clifton Asbury and Katie Metts Mills. She was a 1940 graduate of Newberry College, with a B.A. Degree. Mrs. Hawkins was a member of Union United Methodist Church. She was a former public school teacher and has served as Sunday school teacher, circle chairwoman, and pianist for church and school activities. She was active in the Women's South Carolina Golf Association, a charter member and first president of the Coldstream Ladies Golf Association. She was a four-time winner of the Ladies Club Championship at Coldstream Country Club. Her life's passion was her grandchildren.  Surviving are her husband of 60 years; three sons, W.C. "Chuck" Hawkins Jr., James C. "Jimmy" Hawkins, both of Columbia, Dr. Michael M. Hawkins and his wife Candi of Walterboro; daughter, Katherine H. "Kathy" Weeks and her husband, Tommy, of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Amye H. Cromer, Cee Hawkins, Ashley Hawkins, Mills Hawkins, Zann Hawkins, Katie Weeks and Tyler Hawkins; great-grandson, J.D. Cromer; sister, Margaret Ballard of Laurens; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hawkins was predeceased by a daughter, Harriet Hawkins; brothers, C.A. Mills Jr., H. Elizabeth Holsonback
Newberry, Aug. 29 – Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Holsonback, 71, died suddenly early this morning at her home on first Street. She had been in declining health for the past three years.     Mrs. Holsonback was born and reared in Saluda County, daughter of the late C. O. and Nancy Butler Smith. For the past 26 years she made her home in Newberry. She was a member of Hunt Memorial Baptist church.    She is survived by her husband, Jesse C. Holsonback; the following children: Willie E. Holsonback, J. C. Holsonback, Jr., Mrs. Eva King and Mrs. Lillian Martin, all of Newberry; Cpl. Robert Edward Holsonback USAF Clovis, N. M., Eugene K. Holsonback of Chester, Mrs. Elizabeth Bullard of Patuxent River, Md; two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Butler of Ninety six and Mrs. Eva Leppard of Saluda; 16 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.   Funeral services will be held at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon from Hunt Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Alvin Boone and the Rev. C. O. Dorn officiating. Interment will follow in Baxter Memorial Cemetery.    The body will remain at the McSwain Funeral Home until Saturday afternoon and then be taken to her home, 1401 First Street until the hour of the service...contributed by Randy Butler

Bennett Meredith Harmon
Services for B. Meredith Harmon, 68, of 209 Shelton Drive, Spartanburg, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Central United Methodist Church, with burial at 2:30 p.m. in Rosemont Cemetery of Newberry with Masonic rites.  Memorials may be made to Newberry College P. K. Harmon Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Mr. Harmon died Friday, April 9, 1993.  Born in Prosperity, he was a son of the late Price K. and Birdie Loma Fulmer Harmon.  He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the church choir.  He was retired court reporter for the 8th Judicial Circuit, which included Newberry, Laurens, Greenwood, and Abbeville counties.  He was a member of the Spartanburg Symphony Chorus, Piedmont Sertoma Club and Full Gospel Business Men Fellowship.  He was past master and a 40-year member of Amity Masonic Lodge 87 of Newberry.  A World War II veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater and was a graduate of Newberry College.  Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Ross Harmon; sons, Kenneth Ross Harmon of Chesterfield and Paul Meredith Harmon of Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Sister Adrienne "Nancy" Harmon of Alton, Ill., and Jean Muriel Harmon of Newberry; a sister, Mrs. Kemper Lake of Whitmire; and two grandchildren...contributed by Kenneth R. Mrs. Price K. Harmon
Mrs. Birdie Fulmer Harmon, 88, widow of Price K. Harmon, died Monday morning at the Newberry Convalescent Center.  Mrs. Harmon was born in Chapin, a daughter of the late Paul S. and Susannah T. Bowers Fulmer.  She was a member of Central United Methodist Church.  Music was a very important part of her life.  She was a choir member for over 25 years; the accompanist for the American Legion and the Newberry Lions Club for a number of years; a past president of the Newberry Music Club; and active in the Newberry Community Concert Association.  She was a member of the Newberry Civic League, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 24, a past Regent of the Jasper Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Newberry County Historical Society.  Mrs. Harmon is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Kemper D. (Muriel) Lake of Whitmire; a son, B. Meredith Harmon of Spartanburg; two sisters, Mrs. Toye Chapman of White Rock and Mrs. Adelaide Coleman of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mitchell Houston.  Internment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.  The family suggests those desiring may make memorials to Central United Methodist Church, or the Price K. Harmon Scholarship Fund at Newberry College.  Active pallbearers were Kenneth R. Harmon, Paul M. Harmon, K. David Lake, Jr., Robert E. Jordan, Robert E. Jordan, Jr., and Dr. H. Charles Richard Hartman of Prosperity SC, passed away June 27,2011. He is surrived by his wife Sue Merchant Hartman, a son Charles Barry Hartman, stepmother Faye E. Hartman, sister Judtih Hartman Davis and a granddaughter Meghan Lindsay Hartman. Charles Hussing Hartman passed away June 18,2004.  He was the son of the late J. Berry Hartman and Mattie Counts Hartman. Tabor Lyon Hill, ex-tax official, dies in Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C.-Tabor Lyon Hill, 87, former state senator from Newberry County and retired tax collector, died Wednesday at a Newberry County hospital.  The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today at Whitaker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Nanney officiating. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.  Mr.. Hill, a native of Chappells, S.C., received a B.A. degree in 1908 from Newberry College, and was also a graduate of Draughn's Business College, Columbia. He was a school teacher in South Carolina for several years.  He was a member of Newberry Rotary Club, and served as vice president, secretary and treasurer. Mr. Hill was a veteran of World War I, and a member of American Lesion Post No. 24, and a former director of Newberry Chamber of Commerce.  Survivors include one son, Tabor C. Hill, Charlotte; one sister, Mrs. Mary Dowtin, Bradley, S.C.; and two brothers, George W. Hill, New Orleans, and James J. Hill, Johnston, S.C.  Pallbearers will be CM. Smith, Charlie Allmart, J.G. Purkerson, Dave Hayes. Keitt Purceil, J.N. Beard,.Joe Marett and Dr. Ralph Baker.
