Struck by Lightning
Mr. Henry W. Parkman of Eulala Instantly Killed--a Sad Calamity

News reached this city on Monday morning of the sad and tragic death of Mr. Henry D. Parkman, of the Eulala section. On Sunday evening about dark Mr. Parkman had occasion to go into his yard. When returning to his residence a terrific electric bolt burst upon him, producing instant death. His wife, hearing the loud demonstration and fearing that something had happened, rushed to the door and peering through the darkness discovered her husband lying on the ground. His clothing had been set on fire by the stroke.

Mr. Parkman’s age was 32 years. He leaves a wife and five children.

Many years ago, before the war, Mr. Jas. Parkman, the father of the unfortunate man whose death is related above, was struck by lightning but escaped serious injury. His clothes were badly torn and his survival is considered miraculous.

Bridal Couple Here
Mr. and Mrs. James Bideon McCarey, who were married July 2 in Jersey City, N.J., are spending part of their wedding journey in Columbia visiting Mr. McCarey’s sister, Mrs. R.B. Focht, at her home in Elmwood Park. The bridegroom is also the brother of Miss Ruth McCarey, Mrs. L.A. Smith and Mrs. J.W. Shealy, all of Columbia, and is the son of G.E. McCarey of Newberry, hence his wedding is of interest to many in the state.

His bride was formerly Miss Eileen Keeley, daughter of Mrs. Mary Keeley of 3691 Hudson boulevard, Jersey City.
Mrs. and Mrs. McCarey will go tomorrow to Newberry to visit the former’s father and will leave for Jersey City Wednesday, where they will make their home until Mr. McCarey, who is a noncommissioned officer of the U.S.S. Hopkins, gets his release from the navy.

Mr. and Mrs. Focht are entertaining with a card party in honor of the couple this evening. A pink and white color scheme, carried out with summer flowers, will be used in the rooms where five tables will be played. After the game ices and sweets will be served.

The guests will include Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Kaiser, Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Middleton, Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Graham, Mr. and Mrs. Paul W. Cooper and their house guest, Mrs. C.M. Sims of Cowpens, Mr. and Mrs. J.K. Love, Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Grigsby, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Shealy, Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Denny, Mr. and Mrs. L.N. Henderson, and Misses Ruth McCarey and Betty Cannon. The last two will assist the hostess.

The above is from The State. Mr. and Mrs. McCarey spent several days in Newberry the past week on a visit to his father and brother, W.E. and G.E. McCarey and other relatives in Newberry, and on Sunday during the stay the family went over to Good Hope Baptist church in Saluda county, formerly Edgefield county and the home church of the McCareys in years gone by and the home section where the family lived before coming to Newberry. Wish we could have gone with them to old Good Hope, the place where we were wont to go to church in our boyhood days.
