People's Hospital
Newberry County, South Carolina
contributed by Edith Greisser

The Willing Workers group of the various colored charitable societies in Newberry County met at Bethlehem Baptist Church on October 13, 1934, and fixed their united untiring cooperation in regards to erecting a colored Hospital, in Newberry County. Dr. J. E. Grant explained the condition of the people in caring for the sick and the great need of the Hospital. Brief talks were made by the various presidents of the above groups expressing their willingness to cooperate in getting this much-needed project over. Brother J. B. Williams made some timely suggestions as to the raising of funds. Thanksgiving day has been set aside for the first big rally at the Bethlehem Baptist Church. Come one! Come all! And help in this worthy cause.   Observer 11/9/1934, p1

Small contributions totaling $19.80 were received by the new colored Hospital located on Vincent Street. The contributions were listed in the newspaper with one person donating a $1, several 50¢ and the rest 25¢. The Hospital opened the week of October 4, 1937 and was receiving patients. Larkin Jackson wrote a letter of thanks to all for their help.

The Hospital was begun by the colored people three years prior and in the last week of September 1937 was opened for inspection. A vegetable garden and poultry operation also offered additional support. In January 1952, the People's Hospital merged with Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Observer 10/5/1937, p1

On 10/12/1937 the local fire department answered a call to the colored Hospital where a small blaze was quickly extinguished. It is believed the fire was started from a stove pipe. Little damage was done and firemen used only a little equipment to extinguish the fire.  Observer 10/15/1937, p1
