age 81 years; Mrs. Evans was the founder of the Newberry Public Lounge in 1906; The stone was place by the Newberry Historical Society. The Lounge has been renovated and is still in operation for visitors to Newberry, SC. It is located on the Square on the side of the Old Court House. The Lounge was established for the purpose of women and children who came to town with their husbands and needed a place to rest and refresh themselves while the gentlemen conducted business. It has public restrooms which are still in operation. The Lounge serves as Newberry's Visitors Center today. |
