J. Walker Schumpert, Jr.
J. Walker Schumpert, Jr.,
66 of Columbia, died Friday at the Lexington Medical Center. Mr. Schumpert
was born on May 20, 1937 in Newberry, a son of the late John Walker and
Elizabeth Reese Schumpert. He was a graduate of Newberry College, a retired
systems analysis and was an organ donor.
He was a member of Redeemer
Lutheran Church in Columbia and was a former member of the congregational
council. He was also a member of Lutheran Men and the Dutch Square
Walkers. Mr. Schumpert was a very loving husband and father and he is
survived by his wife, Pawnee Counts Schumpert of the home; a daughter, Kathy
Pawnee Schumpert of Cumming GA; a son, Dwayne Walker Schumpert of Irmo; a
brother and sister-in-law, R. David and Kathy Schumpert of Mountville; a
sister-in-law and spouse, Ruby and Earl Deaton of Prosperity; and two nieces,
Amy S. Owen of Cheraw and Laurie S. Carlton of Laurens. Funeral services
for J. Walker Schumpert will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Redeemer
Lutheran Church by the Rev. Gary Loadholt. Interment will be at 4:00 P.M.
Tuesday at Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6:00
to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin. Memorials may be

Setzler
Sadie Sease Setzler, 94, of 2116 Osborne Ave., Newberry,
widow of Ralph Halfacre Setzler, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005 at her residence.
Mrs. Setzler was born in Newberry County in the St. Philip's community, a
daughter of the late Luther Hampton, Sr. and Bittie Ruff Sease. She was a 1931
graduate of Newberry College. For many years she worked for the Main St. Florist
and Jones Florist, and then she retired as a clerk at B. C. Moore's. Mrs.
Setzler was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, the Cromer/Hipp
Sunday School Class, and the Miriam Circle of The W.E.L.C.A. Mrs. Setzler is
survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Setzler Monroe and Bill Monroe of
Spartanburg; one sister, Julia Kate Sease of Newberry; three grandchildren,
Billy Monroe of Scotland, AR, Betsy M. Antley of Barnwell; and Mary M. Glenn of
Roebuck; six great grandchildren, Trey, Will and Dargan Antley and Zac, Steven,
and Savanna Glenn; and three step-grandchildren, Shane, Stevie and Marvin
Benton. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the Lutheran
Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Steven Counts. Interment was in Newberry
Memorial Gardens. Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker
Funeral Home and the family was at the residence, 2116 Osborne Ave., Memorials

Margaret Sheppard
Margaret Murrah Sheppard, 78, of
2106 Mower St., Newberry, widow of William L. "Bill" Sheppard, died Sunday,
April 13, 2008 at her residence. She was born on December 10, 1929 in
Joanna, a daughter of the late Harmon G. and Cleo Rodgers Murrah. She was a
former employee of Damon International and was a member of Faith Lutheran
Church.
Mrs. Sheppard is survived by a daughter, Brenda Sheppard Lee of N.
Charleston; a son, William Lory Sheppard, Jr. of Newberry; a sister, Alma
Gregory of Columbia; a brother, H. G. "Buck" Murrah, Jr. of Joanna; 5
grandchildren, Aleatha Sheppard Day, Sherry Angel Lee, April Michelle Lee,
Rickey O'Neal Lee, Jr. and Dawn Marie Lee; and 4 great grandchildren, Austan
Jack Day, Alexys Lory Day, Andrew William Day, and Ruby Sheppard Reddington. She
was predeceased by a dear friend, Mrs. Reba Brooks. Funeral services were
conducted at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday at Whitaker Funeral Home by Rev. Rodney Gunter.
Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family was at her
residence and did receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker

Sheppard
Vernon L. Sheppard, 78, of 2903 Nance St., Newberry died
Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Palmetto Richland Hospital.
Mr. Sheppard was born on
September 10, 1925 in Prosperity, a son of the late Lealon H. and Elsie Kyzer
Sheppard.
He was an Army veteran of WW
II, having served with the 4th Infantry, 8th Regiment in the Normandy Invasion,
Northern France and the Rhineland. He received the EAME Service medal with 3
bronze service stars; the Good Conduct Medal; the Blue and Gold Presidential
Citation; the Purple Heart Medal; the World War II Victory Medal and in December
of 2003 he was presented the Normandy Invasion Medal from France and the United
States.
Mr. Sheppard was a retired
employee of Wometco Food Service and was also co-owner of Newberry Antiques and
Auction Co.
He was a member of Bethany
Lutheran Church where he was a former member of the Congregational Council and
where he was very active as long as his health permitted. He was a pioneer
auctioneer, starting in the early 1970's. He was presented the Little Red School
House Award by the Newberry County School District .
Mr. Sheppard is survived by
his wife, Margaret Coates Sheppard of the home; a daughter, Shaye Sheppard Beall
of Newberry; a son, Vernon L. Sheppard Jr. of Taylors; three grandchildren,
Meghan Sheppard Beall, Heather Shaye Beall, and Hillary Ellen Sheppard; a
sister, Rosalyn Amick of Prosperity: and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law,
Dewey and Carolyn Coates, Billy and Lillian Coates, Clyde and Debbie Coates,
Jack and Norma Coates, Elizabeth Jones, Ruby Hughes, Carl Coates, James and
Doris Coates. He was predeceased by two brothers, Bill and Robert and a sister
Mildred.

Vivian L. Shealy, 63, of 1834 Brookside Manor, Newberry,
died Friday, November 7, 2008 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Ms.
Shealy was born in Newberry a daughter of the late E.L. Shealy, Jr. and Dorothy
Reaves Shealy. She was a former manager of I-26 Shell Station and was a member
of West End Baptist Church. She is survived by her sisters, Jackie Bowers and
her husband Tommy of Newberry and Pat Shealy and her husband Don of Prosperity;
nieces, Pam Bowers and Bridget Shealy; nephews, Craig Bedenbaugh, Brian Shealy
and Michael Shealy and a number of great nieces and nephews. Funeral
services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday at West End Baptist Church by the
Rev. Kevin Carter. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Visitation
will be from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home. The family

E.L. Shealy, Jr., 82, of Newberry, died
July 30, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Shealy was born on July 20, 1921 in
Lexington County, a son of the late E. Lester Shealy, Sr. and Vesta Morse
Shealy. Mr. Shealy was retired from Newberry Mills and also retired from
Newberry County Detention Center. He was a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran
Church. Mr. Shealy is survived by his wife, Dorothy Reaves Shealy of the
home, three daughters and two sons-in-laws, Pat and Donald Shealy of Prosperity,
Vivian L. Shealy of Newberry, and Jackie S. and Tommy Bowers of Newberry, two
sisters, Mildred S. Bouknight of Newberry and Eva Mae S. Mims of Hueytown, AL,
two brothers, Robert H. Shealy of Prosperity and Andrew Shealy of Newberry; a
sister-in-law, Bernice C. Shealy of Newberry; five grandchildren and spouses,

Thomas Sligh,
JR.
Thomas Claude Sligh, Jr., 88, of Prosperity, died Wednesday,
May 12, 2010, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Born on November 9, 1921, in
Newberry, he was a son of the late Thomas Claude Sligh, Sr. and Elizabeth Waters
Sligh. He was a World War II Army veteran and the retired owner of Slighs
Superette. Mr. Sligh was a member of New Chapel United Methodist Church where he
was a former superintendent and the first recipient of the Christian Life
Service Award.
Surviving are his wife, Troxel
Berley Sligh; a son, Jimmy (Renee) Sligh of Prosperity; daughters, Barbara
(Roger) Long of Prosperity and Donna (Cary) Frick of Little Mountain; sisters,
Margaret Shealy of Newberry, Audrey Agnew and Marian (Oscar) Bowers both of
Prosperity; a brother, Ray Sligh of Clinton; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Sligh,
Margaret Sligh, Ola Sligh and Joy Sligh; grandchildren, Eddie (Cindy) Long,
Jamie Long, Josh (Niki) Sligh, Derek Frick and Nicole Frick; a great-grandson,

Winfred Elizabeth Shealy Stockman, 85, of Prosperity died
Saturday, October 4, 2008 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Stockman was born on
March 26, 1923 in McCormick. She was the daughter of the late Michael Clifton
and Spencer Carter Shealy. She was retired from General Electric. Mrs. Stockman
was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church, a member and former vice president of
the Goldies, a member of the Golden Agers, Macedonia Jolly Rollers Camping Club
and the Petrea Circle. She was an organist for over 60 years having played for
many churches in the community. She was a member of the Fun Seekers Camping
Club, the Good Sam’s Camping Club, the Newberry Roadrunners Travel Club, a
member of the Prosperity Garden Club and the Little Mountain Ruritan Club.
Surviving are husband, Hubert
Stockman; a daughter, Linda Kaye Felker of Prosperity; sisters, Joyce Paden of
Fair Play and Maxine Thompson of Marietta, GA; granddaughters, Melinda Edelmayer
and Beth Scuderi both of Orlando, FL; great-grandchildren, Brandi Gower, Joshua
Edelmayer, Zachary Scuderi, Madison Chapman, Hannah Scuderi and Emma Scuderi.

Henry Cephas "H.C." Smith
94,
of , Newberry, beloved husband of Lauretha Price Smith, died at his home on
Saturday, April 4, 2009.
Mr. Smith was born on March
26, 1915 in Lexington County, a son of the late Eugene Cullum and Annie Mae
Hallman Smith. He was a graduate of Gilbert High School and was an Army veteran
of World War II.
He served in France and was a
Purple Heart recipient. He retired from The New South Life Insurance Company in
Columbia after 25 years. H.C. was a man of extreme character and faith who
loved his family and friends and lived a very fulfilling life.
He was an active member of the
Lutheran Church of the Redeemer where he had served as Treasurer of the church,
Secretary of the Sunday School for 28 years, was a member of Lutheran Men in
Mission and the Men's Bible Class and served several terms on the Church
Council.
He has been honored for his
community involvement having received the "Book of Golden Deeds" from the
Exchange Club.
He served on the Newberry
Council on Aging and received an 8 year pin for delivery of Meals on Wheels
twice a week He was a Life member of Amity Masonic Lodge # 87, a member of the
Exchange Club for 32 years, American Legion for 50 years and a Life Member of
the Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving in addition to his
wife of almost 72 years are two daughters and husbands, Sandra and Rodger
Hawkins of Greer, S.C. and JoAnn and Bill Anderson of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one son
and his wife, Gene and Linda Smith of Lexington, SC; eight grandchildren, Brad
Hawkins, Lindsay (Kevin) Thalinger, Ryan Albers, Reagan (Neil) Ferguson, Presley
(Jason) Painter, Lauren (Jimmy) Butts, Craig (Christine) Smith, and Paige
(Kevin) Bobo; eight great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Sue Smith Stover and
a sister-in-law, Faye Smith. He was predeceased by his son, Robert "Bob" Smith
and his brother, Edward E. Smith, Sr. Funeral services were conducted at

Thursday, August 6, 2009 at National Health Care, Lexington.
Mrs. Smith was born May 3,
1919, in Monroe, GA to the late Coey and Beaulah Fambrough McElroy. She was a
member Epting Memorial United Methodist Church.
She retired as a seamstress
from Damon. She loved to travel with Christian Tours and Epteens. Mrs. Smith is
survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Gary P. and Margaret Smith of Cayce, and
Michael C. and Faye Smith of Cayce; two grandchildren, Christy Smith and Davin
Smith; and a great grandson, Preston. She is also survived by a special niece,
Susan Carithers of Ellenwood, GA. She was predeceased by sisters, Mae Kitchens,
Clara Waldrop, Sarah Smith; and brother, Edwin McElroy.

Newberry, died Saturday, April 8, 2006, at the home of her daughter in
Pendleton, SC. Mrs. Sheely was born on July 9, 1910 in Burke County, NC; she was
a daughter of the late Louis M. and Bertha Cook Wilson. She was a retired L.P.N.
with Newberry County Memorial Hospital. She was the oldest member of the
Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, George B. Cromer Sunday School Class and WELCA,
Circle #4. Mrs. Sheely is survived by a sister, Margie Bowers of
Prosperity; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Burney Drake of Pendleton; a
son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Cathy Sheely of Charlotte, NC; a daughter-in
law, Barbara Sheely of Lexington; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by a son, Louis

Newberry - Keith Wayne Shealy, 75, of Newberry died
Saturday, July 3, 2010 at his residence. Born in Prosperity, he was a son of the
late Otway and Ina Mae Wise Shealy. He was retired from the South Carolina
Department of Transportation and was a Navy Veteran having served on the U.S.S.
Claude V. Ricketts. He was an active member of Lewis Memorial United Methodist
Church where he was a member of the Millie Hamby Sunday School Class and
formerly served on the Board of Trustees. He enjoyed his grandchildren and
biking. He was a member of Carolina Cyclist and Three Wheelers of Spartanburg.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy King Shealy; two sons, Dalton Shealy and his
wife Helen of Virginia Beach, VA, and Anthony Shealy and his wife Freda of
Laurens; a daughter, Denise Poteat and her husband Dave of Newberry; two
sisters, Jane Wicker of Prosperity, and Sandra Gilliam of West Columbia; and a
brother, Ethan Shealy of Chapin; grandchildren, Casey Lybrand, Erika Roberts,
Nicholas Shealy, Kristopher Shealy, Ashley Mendenhall, Bryant Shealy, and

Mrs. Stone was born on October
07, 1914, in Whitmire, to the late John Raymond and Eugenia Catherine Baker. She
was retired from J.P. Stevens Company, Whitmire Plant.
She was a member of Whitmire
Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Willie Miller Sunday School
Class. Mrs. Stone is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and
Ordie Campbell, Linda and Jimmy Lominick all of Whitmire, and Judy Epting of
Newberry; eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Willene Stone of Whitmire; two

was retired from Betty's Nursery. She was a member of Glenn Street Baptist
Church. She is survived by two daughters, Debra S. Willingham of Newberry;

The family was at her residence, 36 Player Street. Active pallbearers were

Elizabeth "Dudder" Sligh Snelgrove, 95, of Pomaria, and widow of Carl C.
Snelgrove, Sr. died Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at White Oak Manor. Mrs.
Snelgrove was born on January 25, 1915 in Newberry County to the late Albert A.
and Mary Cromer Sligh. She was a member of Colony Lutheran Church. She is
survived by a son, Carl C. (Judy) Snelgrove, Jr. of Chapin; two daughters,
Margaret (Jim) Williams of Chapin and Clara Sue Waites of Pomaria; seven
grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, James A. Sligh; sisters, Ruth Stroud, Sarah
Long, and Frances Roton; and a son-in-law, Kenneth Waites. Funeral services will
be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, at Colony Lutheran Church by the Rev. Jerry
Trantham. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00
to 6:30 PM Friday, at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry. Pallbearers will be
Frankie Sease, Austin Waites, Mike Snelgrove, Dean Long, Clint Monts, and Randy

Robert Shealy
Robert “Bobby” Cecil Shealy,
86, of Newberry, died Thursday, September 23, 2010, at Newberry County Memorial
Hospital.
Born on January 24, 1924, in
Newberry, he was a son of the late Simon L. Shealy, Sr. and Lula Pearl Shealy.
He was a World War II Army veteran and was a retired carpenter and painter
having worked with Shealy and Boozer Carpenters and later owned Shealy’s Home
Repair. Mr. Shealy was a member of Colony Lutheran Church where he was a member
of the Lutheran Men and had served in many other capacities over the years in
the church. He served for many years as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and a
volunteer with the Clemson Extension at the Newberry Farmer’s Market.
Surviving are his wife of 63
years, Carolyn Cook Shealy; daughters, Vicki (Raymond) Ruff and Donna Sanders
both of Newberry; grandchildren, Cathryn E. “Beth” (Mike) Jaeger and Raymond H.
Ruff III and great-grandchildren, Mallorie A. Jaeger and Kindel C. Jaeger. Mr.
Shealy was predeceased by a son-in-law, Tim Sanders and his siblings, Alton
Leonard Shealy, Vernon Shealy, Drucy Son, Ruby Gentry, Ethel Hyler, Hugh Shealy,
Mary Brigman and S.L. “Toot” Shealy, Jr.
Funeral services will be held
at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, September 25, 2010, at Colony Lutheran Church by the Rev.
Jerry Trantham. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will
receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

Whitmire, May 13 – Mrs. Pearl Smith, 62, widow of Sam
P. Smith died at the Newberry County hospital this afternoon after a short
illness. Funeral services will be conducted from Good Hope church, Saluda County
at 4:30 Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. E. S. Jones and the Rev. Connaly
Gamble officiating. Interment will follow in the church
cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Vera
Smith; three sons, Clyde, Lonell and James Smith, and three sisters, Mrs.

Reckless Buggy Driving Results in Man’s
Death
Newberry, July 16, 1943 –
Reckless driving of a horse and buggy resulted in the killing of a man here
yesterday. Sam Pitts (Doc) Smith, 50, was shot by Deputy Sheriff Hub J.
Quattlebaum while the officer was attempting to make the arrest on North Glenn
street. Deputy Quattlebaum, it is alleged, grabbed the reins, was knocked down
and dragged some distance. Smith, it was reported, then started beating him with
a buggy whip. The shooting followed. Previously, City Policeman J. J. Hitt
who was called to the scene was struck by the driver several times, it was said.
Deputy Sheriff Quattlebaum is under $1,000 bond. Coroner I. Holland Wilson said
an inquest would be conducted next week. Mr. Smith is survived by his
widow, the former Miss Pearl Norris Smith, and the following children: Clyde
Smith, Lonnie L. Smith and Nancy Smith of Newberry, and Staff Agt. James C.
Smith, San Diego, Calif; four sisters, Mrs. Ida Clamp of Abbeville, Mrs. Willie
Leopard of Saluda, Mrs. Carrie Butler of Ninety Six and Mrs. Lizzie Holsonback
of Newberry. Funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon at
Good Hope Baptist Church in Saluda County, with the Rev. O. H. Hatchett in
charge, assisted by the Rev. W. S. Cromer. Burial will be in the church

Mary Frances Platt Stone, 82, of
Prosperity, died Monday, March 15, 2010, at her residence.
Born on November 20, 1927, in
St. George, she was a daughter of the late Marshall L. and Sally Fickling Platt.
She was a member of St. Philip’s Lutheran Church.
Surviving is her husband,
David W. Stone; daughters, Deborah (Bernard) Herman and Robin (Jimmy) Richardson
both of Prosperity; a brother, Carroll Platt of Alabama; a granddaughter, Taylor
Richardson. Mrs. Stone was predeceased by a grandson, Hunter James Richardson
and a brother, Marshall Platt, Jr.

Amick Shealy, died Thursday, January 15, 2009, in Newberry County Memorial
Hospital. Born May 1, 1922, in Chapin, he was a son of the late Ardell and
Bertha Sites Shealy. Mr. Shealy had retired from Kendall Company, having worked
at the Mollohon and Oakland Plants. He was a member of Summer Memorial Lutheran
Church. Surviving are his sons, Larry (Sarah) Shealy and C. Dale (Ann) Shealy,
both of Newberry; daughters, Peggy (Joe) Boozer of Prosperity, and Cheri (Eddie)
Malcom of Newberry; a sister, Susie S. Frick of Little Mountain; brothers,
Charles F. Shealy and A.J. "Junior" Shealy, both of Prosperity, and Claude H.
Shealy of Little Mountain; grandchildren, Michelle Long, Clay Shealy, Kelli
Davenport, Kristi Shealy and Garrett Malcom, four great-grandchildren and two

Born in Prosperity, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Early and Chole Shealy
Amick. Mrs. Shealy was a retired employee of Prosperity Manufacturing and
a member of Summer Memorial Lutheran Church. Surviving are her husband,
Clarence E. Shealy; her children and their spouses, Peggy and Joe Boozer of
Prosperity, Larry E. and Sarah Shealy, Dale and Ann Shealy and Cheri and Eddie

8, 2011.

March 7, 1922. Mrs. Slice was a daughter of the late John Jacob Kibler and Annie
Lee Wood Kibler. She attended Newberry College and worked most of her life as a
bookkeeper with Kendall Company, Mollohon Plant and Carter and Holmes
Greenhouses.
She was passionate about
family, friends and her faith. She was passionate about gardening with her
husband, George. She was passionate about her life, love, and sharing whatever
bounty was hers to give; from fresh to canned vegetables, to baking tons of her
signature pound cakes. Sadie was a lifelong member of Summer Memorial Lutheran
Church where she lived her life in service, holding many positions in whatever
capacity she could lend a helping hand. She will always be remembered by family.
She left us as she lived; gently and with purpose, hands folded in prayer.
Mrs. Slice is survived by her
son and daughter-in-law, Jerry K. Slice and Charlotte P. Slice; her daughter and
son-in-law, Sandra L. Hayes and Edward Hayes; three grandchildren, Porter K.
Slice, Lianne H. March and Jessica H. Steen; three great-grandchildren, Allen
March IV, Alexa March and Liam Steen; and a sister, Mary Helen Timmons of
Blowing Rock, NC; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband,
George Adams Slice, with whom she shared 50 years and by her sister, Margaret K.
Hughes of Columbia.

St. Claire Dodd Sease,
67, of Quinby died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, in a Florence hospital after an
illness.
She was born in Charleston, a
daughter of the late George Andrew and Mary Claire Dodd Sease. She was a member
of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Columbia, a life member of the NRA and a member
of the AARP. She retired as a clerk/typist at Moncrief Army Hospital in Fort
Jackson.
Surviving are her sister,
Federal Judge Grace Andrea Sease of Atlanta; brother, George A. Sease and his
wife, Susan Gore Sease, of Quinby; nieces, Ruth A. Sease and Mary L. Sease of
Quinby; and a number of cousins.

Shealy,
Susanna C. Mrs. 87 years old widow of John N. Shealy died March 27, 19 26 at the
home of her son in-law L. V. Livingston about 8½ miles from the City on the
Newberry/Pomaria highway following a weeks illness of the flu. Surviving were
her children: Edwin Shealy of Columbia, Mrs. J. T. Livingston, Mrs. T. S.
Livingston, Mrs. E. T. Werts and Ms. Agnes Shealy, all of Newberry County.
