South Carolina Genealogy Trails

Contributed by submitted by John Howell (contributors note: Major McMichael was an officer in the British Militia in Orangeburg District. All of his sons fought for the Americans and all daughters married men who did likewise.  His son, George, Jr., to show his patriotism, named three sons with middle names: Orange, Burg, and County.

By His Excellency Sir Henry Clinton, Knight of the Most Honorable Order of Bath, General and Commander in Chief of all His Majesty's Forces, within the Colonies laying on the Atlantic Ocean, from Nova-Scotia to West-Florida inclusive, etc, etc, etc

To George McMichael Esqr

By virtue of the Power and Authority in me vested, I do hereby constitute and appoint you to be Major to the Regt of Orangeburg Militia commanded by Col. John Fisher and like wise to be Captain of a Company in the said Regt.  You are therefore to take the said Regt. as Major, and the said Company as Captain, into your Care and Charge, and duly to exercise as well the Officers as Soldiers thereof in Arms, and to use your best endeavouring to keep them in good Order and Discipline; and I do hereby command them to obey you as their Major and Captian respectively; And you are to observe and follow such Orders and Directions from Time to Time as you shall receive from the General or Commander in Chief of His Majesty's Forces in North America, now and for the Time being, your Col. or any other your superior Officer, according to the Rules and Discipline of War, in Pursuance of the Trust hereby reposed in you.

Given under my Hand and Seal at Head-Quarters, Charles Town in the First Day of August, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty in the Twenty Year of the Reign of Our Sovereign, Defender of the Faith and so forth.
