pg. 688 Orin Nelson Bowman, Rowe's Pump, S.C., was born in Orangeburg, co., S.C., Feb. 22d, 1834 and is descended from Dutch and English stock. He was educated at Orangeburg high school, and received his degree of M.D. from the S.C. med. coll. in 1857. In his practice, which has always been pursued in his native county, he had a case of abscess of the womb....He is a member of the Orangeburg co., med. soc.; of the S.C. med. asso. During the war served as asst. surg. in 14th reg. S.C. militia.

pg. 591 Thomas Legare, Orangeburg, S.C., was born in Charleston S.C., Feb. 15th, 1852. His parents were French Protestants, early settlers in Charleston, S.C., and he is a cousin of the late Hugh S. Legare, attorney-general United States under President Tyler, and minister to Brussels. His early education was acquired at the Yorkville military acad., S.C., and he was prepared for a professional career at the S.C. med. coll., graduating from that institution in the spring of 1873. His first place of settlement was at Orangeburg, S.C., 1873, whence he moved to Charleston, S.C in October, 1877. A very notable case which came under his supervision was one of bloodless amputation of forearm, of considerable interest on account of its extreme rarity; the nature of the case was that of a gunshot wound in an Orangeburg county lad, nineteen years of age. The case was seen by Dr. L. and two prominent practitioners of the vicinity twenty-four hours after the accident; amputation necessary; middle third forearm left; and the operation was performed in the presence of the two physicians. AS stated the patient lost no blood exclusive of capillary hemorrhage, which loss was of no consequence; and in the entire amputation lost scarcely a half ounce of blood, tourniquet in the meantime being removed. After search for the arteries, ......He is a member of the med. soc. of Charleston, S.C., and of the S.C. State med. asso. He was resident phys of Roper and city hosp., S.C. in 1871-72-73, and during the years 1875-76-77 was surgeon to public institutions, Orangeburg poorhouse, and jail. His contributions to medical literature consist of various articles published in leading medical journals. He was married, Feb. 15th, 1877, to a daughter of Thomas H. Zimmerman, of St. Matthews, S.C.
