William Paschal O'Shields born in 1824 July 4'  in Walnut Grove Spartanburg County S.C. and died 1909 January 2' at the age of 84. He was first married in 1853 according to some records. I have heared from family members that he was married to (Hammond not Harmon) Minervie Caroline Hammond and she was born in January 13' 1831' in South Carolina which we believe to have been Spartanburg South Carolina.  He was a son of Nancy O'Shields.

Charles' great Uncle, William Paschal O'Shields

who born August 17 1804.  William Paschal O'Shields moves from Spartanbug County S.C.

He was born in Walnut Grove Spartanburg County S.C.  This was 272 acres of farm land which was their homestead and was called the O'Shields plantation. The plantation was a house that had no shape just a long building. It had long tables on the outside. This is where they went to eat on special events like maybe a Reunion. Nancy always stayed busy in the house with her daughter or helping others.  Nancy O'Shields was a nurse maid and also worked in a doctors office. But as we go back to William Paschal O'Shields  we need to tell you that William had brothers and a sister. William was the oldest of these children. His brother, Samuel Drayton O'Shields was born 1825. Next was Wiley Drayton O'Shields, born 1832-1882.  He died at the age of 50 years. Polly Ann O'Shields born 1833' and Isaac Scott O'Shields born 1834 or 1835.  Now these brothers worked together each doning their part of the work.  William played in the O'Shields band as did his brothers. But as time went on these brothers left the homestead in which they were born. William left and he went to N.C. Must have been about 1856. This is about the year that he met Elizabeth Heaton. We do not know when they got married -  maybe 1856 but can't prove this date. They were both in Pickens and this is where they spent the rest of their lives. William Paschal O'Shields stayed in Pickens till his Death in 1908' He was 84 years of age at his death.

According to early census records' William Paschal O'Shields and his wife Caroline were the parents of 13' children. And even in 1900 12 of these children were still living. I will name all the children that I have listed. Francis; Mandy; Mary; Wm Franklin; Josephine; Robert A.m. Augustus; Caroline ;Printhy; John; Sallie; Corra; Newton P'  and McDaniel ;Daniel; O'Shields.

In 1856  William Paschal O'Shields was in North Carolina this is where he met Elizabeth Heaton she was born 1825. In 1857 both of them were in Pickens South Carolina where they had a small farm house. I do not know when or what year they were married I will say 1856  in North Carolina but I don't have no proof of this. But this I know that they were in Pickens S.C.  1857  and Elizabeth Heaton was already with child. William Paschal O'Shields was over 6' feet tall as a young man William had blue eyes and black hair. William and Elizabeth had four children.

I  will name these children. Sarah Jane O'Shields born 1857 and died  1932. Next Isaac O'Shields born 7-15-1859-1941. Milas O'Shields born 1860 and died 1944. We have Joseph O'Shields I don't have his birthdate. This is all their children that were born in the home.

BothWilliam and Elizabeth were members of Mt. Carmel Baptist  Church in Pickens South Carolina. William Paschal O'Shields loved the Irsh tunes and when he was just a young man he would stand up with anyone in the O'Shields String Band as they played irsh tunes at the O'Shields Reunion. I don't know if this is true or not but they told that John O'Shields was so short that he had to stand on a box to reach the others in the band and they would laugh at him. But as you know the O'Shields could tell some things sometime.

Elizabeth Heaton

Elizabeth Heaton -

There has been lots said about Elizabeth Heaton born in N.C. in the year 1825. Some say that she was a full blooded cherokee indian. I will tell you I don't know if she was or not but I will say that she did have indian in her. Which none of this don't matter. She met William Paschal O'Shields in about 1856. Why that William Paschal O'Shieldsl was in North Carolina but he was. It is believed that they were married in 1856 but we have not been able to find any recoreds to back this up. They were in Pickens SC. in 1857 living in a small farm house. Picture in your mind about this couple as they were making their home in Pickens South Carolina. William Paschal O'Shields was a good farmer as he grew most of their food in those day's. As I have said before that William Paschal O'Shields was over 6ft. tall and as a young man he had black hair and blue eyes. I have put Elizabeth Heaton O'Shields picture and her husband's picture on here.
