Mrs. Hawkins Dies in Hospital

Mrs. Mary Alberta Martin Hawkins, 56, for many years a resident of the Martin community near Lugoff and formerly of Boykin, died at 4:45 Friday morning at the Camden Hospital.  Funeral services were conducted from Salem Methodist Church in Richland County (Ft. Jackson) at 11 o¹clock Saturday morning by the Rev. Velma Mason.  Burial was in the church yard.

Mrs. Hawkins, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Martin, is survived by her husband, H. A. Hawkins of Lugoff; four sons, Hugh and McNeil Hawkins of Dentsville and Halkard A. Hawkins; three daughters, Miss Nancy Hawkins and Mrs. Charlotte Hammond of Lugoff and Mrs. Minnie LeGrande of Columbia; one brother J. M. Elizabeth Harrison

Columbia -- Services for Elizabeth Robertson Harrison, 86, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 11, at Centennial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Centennial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church Capital Improvement Fund. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mrs. Harrison, wife of the late Amos Astor Harrison, died Thursday, January 9, 2003. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late John Mabry and Sarah Geneva White Robertson. She retired from the South Carolina Department of Archives.

A longtime member of the Centennial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, she was a member of the Rosa Draffin Circle and played the piano and taught in the children's department for many years. Her gift of music, baking and generosity to others will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a son, Richard A. Harrison of West Columbia; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Evie Harrison of Greenville, and Steve W. and Allison Harrison of Lexington; brother, Joe Mabry Robertson of Columbia; grandchildren, John, Christopher and Ricky; and great-grandchildren, John and Geneva. Amos Harrison

COLUMBIA - Services for Amos A. Harrison, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Centennial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the John A. Bigham Men's Bible Class. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. tonight at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Centennial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, Capital Improvement Fund, 1413 Laurel St., Columbia, SC 29201.

Mr. Harrison died Monday, March 4, 2002. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Augustus M. and Hattie Mae McManus Harrison. A graduate of old Columbia High School and an Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired federal postal employee. He was a longtime member of Centennial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and John A. Bigham Men's Bible Class.

He was given good values, lived them and passed them on.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Laura Elizabeth Robertson Harrison; son, Richard A. Harrison of West Columbia, sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Evie Harrison of Greenville and Steve W. and Allison Harrison of Lexington; grandsons, John, Christopher and Ricky; and great-grandchildren, John and Geneva. Happy Harrison

Columbia - Services for Harriett "Happy" Harrison, 67, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at North Trenholm Baptist Church with burial in Elmwood Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorial may be made to Joyful Seekers Sunday School Class or to the Preparing the Way Fund at the church.

Mrs. Harrison died Thursday, June 18, 1998. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Algernon Burr and Nettie Marie Martin Harrison. She had a diversified career as a registered nurse, concluding with the University of South Carolina MRFIT program. She was an active member of North Trenholm Baptist Church and the Joyful Seekers Sunday School class.

The family said she was a loving wife and mother.

Surviving are her husband, Raymond A. Harrison of Columbia; son, David Harrison of Lexington; daughters, Marie Butler of Pelzer, Diane Dukes of Atlanta and Linda Harrison Hotchkiss of Columbia; sisters, Del Yonce, Joan Joye and Algene McCoy, all of Columbia; and nine grandchildren. Last Rites Today for W. T. Harrison
Services at 1 o'clock From Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd

Funeral services for William T. Harrison, 63, who died at his home, 621 Jackson Street, yesterday morning, will be conducted at 1 o'clock this afternoon from the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd by the Rev. Lewis N. Taylor, rector. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr. Harrison was a lifelong resident of Columbia and a member of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. He was a blacksmith with the Southern Railway and was a member of the International Association of Blacksmiths and Helpers. He was also a member of Live Oak camp, Woodmen of the World.

Pallbearers will be six nephews: A. F. Harrison, A. M. Harrison, W. B. Harrison, A. B. Harrison, Mordecai Harrison and Archie Harrison. (The State Newspaper, Columbia, South Carolina - April 4, 1937)

John T. Gaston
, probate judge of Richland county, and well known throughout South Carolina, died suddenly yesterday while seated in his office at the court house.  The cause of death was heart trouble.  He had been in ill health for more than a year and at frequent intervals had been forced to remain at his home, near Colonial Heights.  Judge Gaston had been a resident of Columbia for 15 years.  He was stricken shortly afternoon.  The funeral arrangements will be announced later.

He was great sachem of the order of Red Men for South Carolina.  Last year he and Mrs. Gaston enjoyed an extended trip West, visiting the home of Mrs. Gaston's sister and returning by the way of Toledo, Ohio, where he attended, as a State delegate, the grand council of the order.

The following children, together with his wife, Mrs. Sarah A. Gaston, survive: Miss Allie Gaston of Columbia, Mrs. W. H. Sandifer of Denmark, William H. Gaston of Columbia, John H. Gaston of Columbia, James W. Gaston of Augusta, Mrs. W. S. Sayden, of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. F. T. Dupont of Savannah, Ga., and Mrs. C. L. Magalis of Waycross, Ga.

John T. Gaston was born in Edgefield district in August, 1841.  He was the son of William Gaston and Elizabeth Sawyer Gaston, his father coming from Fishing Creek, Chester district.  Mr. Gaston went to the Arsenal school in Columbia, and in 1869 married Miss Sarah Anne Weathersbee from Barnwell.  He took a prominent part in the election of Hampton in 1876 to 1880, served as probate judge for 12 years in Aiken county, and held a similar position in Richland county at the time of death, succeeding W. H. Cobb, who was elected solicitor. (The State - April 2, 1911)


Mrs. Hinnant Dies
Wife of B. A. Hinnant Passes at Resident

Mrs. Bessie Elizabeth Hinnant, wife of B. A. Hinnant, died at the residence, 2023 Gadsden street, yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock.

Mrs. Hinnant, who was 23 years old at the time of her death, having been born May 21, 1898, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Kinard Epps, formerly of Newberry. She was married to Mr. Hinnant in December, 1915.

She is survived by her husband, B. A. Hinnant, her mother, Mrs. J. K. Epps, two sisters, Mrs. T. E. McCullough of Columbia and Mrs. J. M. Morris of Newberry, also two brothers, W. E. Eps of Newberry and Hugh K. Epps of Atlanta.

Mrs. Hinnant was a member of the Backman chapel, Lutheran church, Newberry.

The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence, 2023 Gadsden street, and will be conducted by the Rev. H. A. McCullough. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.

Mr. Hinnant is employed by M. B. DuPre company. The following have been requested to act as pallbearers: A. G. Fisher, W. M. Mobley, T. A. Heise, Grover Kirby, B. M. Rodgers and M. B. DuPre. (The State September 16, 1921)
 
B. M. Harrison

The funeral services of the late B. M. (Benjamin Mordecai) Harrison, who died Sunday night (1/8/1922) at the olumbia Hospital, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home in Edgewood, followed by interment in Barhamville cemetery.

Mr. Harrison, who was 64 years of age, died at the hospital Sunday night at 9:35 o'clock after an illness of about two weeks.

Mr. Harrison had many friends who are saddened by the news of his death. Mr. Harrison was a prominent planter.

He is survived by his widow; by one son, A. M. Harrison, by four daughters, Mrs. W. D. Nunn, Mrs. J. T. Nunn and Misses Maggie Lee and Ola Harrison, all of Columbia. He also leaves three brothers: Archie Harrison of Shandon, W. T. Harrison of Columbia and B. J. Harrison of Edgewood.

Dies at Edgewood
Mrs. Martha A. Hornsby, Aged 60, to be Buried Today

Mrs. Martha Ann Hornsby, aged 60, died yesterday at the home of her only son, L. S. Hornsby, at Edgewood. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon at the residence and interment will be in Barhamville Cemetery. The Rev. George A. Blackburn, D. D., pastor of the Arsenal Hill Presbyterian Church, will conduct the services.

Mrs. Hornsby's husband, the late Lawrence Franklin Hornsby, died 17 years ago yesterday. Mrs. Hornsby has been an invalid for about 10 years. (The State, Columbia, South Carolina - September 26, 1913) 

Mrs. I. Gardner of Columbia Dies
Mrs. Isabel Emma Gardner, 77, died at the residence of her son, Jesse D. Gardner, 3100 Colonial Drive, at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon after an illness of several months.

Mrs. Gardner was born in Kershaw County, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Cobb Martin. She lived in Columbia for the past 32 years. She was a member of Main Street Methodist Church and a member of Woodman Circle, Magnolia Grove, No. 67.

Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Gardner of Columbia; five sons, T. F. Gardner of Hobes Sound, Florida; W. M. Gardner, B. A. Gardner and Jesse D. Gardner of Columbia and James E. Gardner of Richmond, Virginia; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. B. T. Harrison Final Rites Held
Services Conducted Sunday for Columbia Woman
Who Died Christmas Day

Funeral services for Mrs. Charlotte Elizabeth Harrison of 2408 Two Notch Road, who died at 2:30 Christmas afternoon (Dec. 25, 1937) at the Columbia Hospital, were conducted at 2 o¹clock yesterday from Edgewood Methodist Church by the Rev. J. A. Barrett, pastor.  Interment was in the Harrison cemetery.

Mrs. Harrison had made her home in Columbia for the past 15 years. She leaves many friends who will regret to learn of her passing.

She is survived by her husband, Benjamin T. Harrison; two daughters, Mrs. Vida Belle Harrison and Mrs. Archie Gantt of Columbia; three sons, Durham T. Harrison, Paul O. Harrison  and Philip H. Harrison of Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Porter and Mrs. H. A. Hawkins of Kershaw, and a brother J. M. Martin of Kershaw.

Pall bearers were: A. D. Daniels,  W. E. Maret, George Shillito, E. T. Porter, Sam Sessions and A. S. Bradford. 

B. T. Harrison dies at Hospital

Benjamin Thomas Harrison, 80, of Route 2, Lugoff, died late Wednesday night (Feb. 4, 1959) at the Veteran's Hospital.
He was born in Richland County, the son of the late Benjamin and Martha Jane Muse Harrison.  He was a member of Salem Methodist Church and was a Spanish-American War Veteran.  He was retired from the Southern Railroad in 1943.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. C. C. Whittle, Jr.,  of Williston and Mrs. Agnes Gantt of Lugoff; three sons, Durham T. Harrison of Williston, Paul O. Harrison of Walterboro and Philip H. Harrison, of Columbia; one sister, Mrs. Tanner (? difficult to read) of Orangeburg; 14 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon from Salem Methodist Church at Blaney conducted by the Rev. Bessie Parker.  Internment will be in the Harrison Grave Yard, Columbia. The body of Mr. Harrison will be taken to the church at one o'clock this afternoon.

Mr. Harrison served in the Spanish-American War with the South Carolina Infantry, Company I, Camp George H. Thomas, Chickamauga, Georgia, and Camp Cubalibre, and Columbia Camp.

He was a devoted member of the Methodist Church, having served as teacher and superintendent of the Sunday school and as a member of the official board for a number of years.

Active pallbearers will be Arnold Porter, Asbury Martin, Colie Hawkins, Osborne Brazzell, Clifton Daniels, and John LeGrand.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sunday school class at Salem Methodist Church, M. F. Harrison, Dewy Brazzell, Fred Miles, George Palmer, Willie Parks, Willie Harrison, and Frank Brown. (The State, Columbia, South Carolina)

Burr Harrison
(he died in Chester District; was probably buried in Columbia)

Died on the  18th Aug., 1822 in Chester District, South Carolina, in the 84th year of his age, Burr Harrison, Esq. He was a native of Virginia, but had resided in this state for the last thirty-eight years of life life, ....... He served as Captain under Major General DeLafayette in the Rev. army. He was a tender parent and a humane master. He had twelve children, eight-four grandchildren, and sixty great-grandchildren.  He embraced religion when about 30 years of age. .....His mind was much impaired for the last thirteen years of his life, but to the joy of his children ...... they had reason to believe his right mind was restored to  him again a short time before his death and that he fell  asleep in the arms of Jesus. Mrs. A. F. Harrison Dies at Hospital
Funeral for Beloved Columbia Woman to be Held this Afternoon

Mrs. Anna Williamson Harrison, 71, wife of A. F. Harrison, 2840 Devine Street, died at Columbia Hospital at 12:55 o'clock yesterday morning after an illness of ten days.

She was the daughter of Wade Williamson and Elizabeth Rawls Williamson and was born April 6, 1860, and spent practically her entire life in Columbia.

She was a devoted member of Main Street Methodist Church and a woman of many fine traits of character. She was well known in Columbia and left many friends and relatives who mourn her death.

The following relatives survive, her husband, A. F. (Archibald Fetner) Harrison, Sr.; a son, A. F. Harrison, Jr.; six daughters, Mrs. W. E. Smith, Mrs. W. E. Harris, Mrs. J. E. Wallace, Mrs. T. C. Mustin, Miss Margaret M. Harrison and Miss Bessie M. Harrison, all of Columbia; one brother, S. W. Williamson of Wauchula, Florida; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at the late residence at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon conducted by the Rev. R. L. Holroyd, pastor of Main Street Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. W. L. Mullikin, pastor of Washington Street Methodist Church.

The following will act as pallbearers: J. B. G. Campbell, G. Flavie Cooper, C. P. Davis, R. A. Feagan, T. D. Murtiashaw and E. L. Allison.

Dies of Pneumonia
Mrs. B. J. Harrison Passes Away at Home in Edgewood

Mrs. B. J. Harrison of Edgewood died at her home last night at 7 o'clock of pneumonia. Mrs. Harrison was 44 years old and is survived by her husband and several children. Funeral services will be held at the residence this afternoon at 4 o'clock. Hold Funeral Today
Services for B. J. (Burr John) Harrison Set for This Afternoon

The funeral of B. J. Harrison, who died at his residence in Edgewood Friday night, will be held at the Edgewood Methodist Church at 5 o'clock this afternoon, the funeral services to be conduced by the Rev. Wade H. Boggs, pastor of the Arsenal Hill Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev. W. S. Petters. Interment will be at Barhamville Cemetery.

Mr. Harrison was 57 years old and leaves a large number of friends in Columbia to mourn his death. He was an Odd Fellow and was also a faith member of the Presbyterian Church. His wife died several years ago.

Bessie Harrison

Columbia Graveside services for Bessie A. Smith Harrison, 82, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Crescent Hill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Harrison, wife of the late Louie L. Harrison Sr., died Friday, Sept. 26, 1997. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Callie Martin Smith. She was a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving: sons Louie L. Harrison Jr. and John M. Harrison, both of Elgin; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. (The State, Columbia, South Carolina)

Mrs. Harrison Dies at Hospital


Mrs. W. T. (William Thomas) Harrison died at the Columbia Hospital yesterday afternoon after a brief illness. (Elizabeth Caroline ("Lizzie") Corley)

She was a member of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and the widow of W. T. Harrison who died about six years ago.

Surviving are two sons, B. John Harrison of Columbia and Laurie A. Harrison of Wilmington, North Carolina; two daughters, Mrs. Idessa H. Newman of Columbia and Mrs. George Otto of Key West, Florida; three sisters Mrs. T. P. Spencer and Mrs. D. Lewis Husbands of Florence and Mrs. W. A. LeGrande of Dentsville; two brothers, H. F. Corley of Dentsville and J. J. Corley of Florence; 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren also survive.

Active pallbearers will be H. P. Meetze, W. A. and A. F. Harrison, A. F. Bahles, A. Heyward Fetner and L. M. Allison.

Funeral services will be held at 12:45 o'clock today at the Church of the Good Shepherd with the Rev. Lewis N. Taylor, rector, officiating.

J. D. Gardner, Office Supply Executive, Dies

Jesse DeBruhl Gardner, 60, died suddenly at his residence, 3100 Colonial Drive, at 10:30 Sunday morning after being in declining health for the past several months.

He was born in Kershaw County, the son of the late Thomas Gardner and Isabella Martin Gardner. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and was vice president of Columbia Office Supply Company.

He is survived by one sister, Miss Lillian Gardner of Columbia; two brothers, Benjamin A. Gardner of Columbia and James E. Gardner of Richmond, Virginia; a number of nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held from the Main Street Methodist Church at 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Dr. A. B. Ferguson.

Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be James G. Holmes, George Nungezer, John Henry Dorroh, Paul E. Hughes, Cecil Buddin and John C. Nash. Mary Hipp

IRMO - Service for Mary Derrick Hipp, 68, will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, Ballentine, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Carl Cleary and Rev. Jimmy Nates will officiate. Memorials may be made to Shady Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1918 Shady Grove Rd., Irmo, SC 29063. Visitation will be 7-8:30 today at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo.

Mrs. Hipp died Thursday, November 2, 2000. Born in Irmo, she was a daughter of the late Page N. and Katie Chapman Derrick. A graduate of Chapin High School and Columbia Commercial College, she worked for 42 years with Raymond R. Finch and Co. and Finch, Hamilton and Co., Certified Public Accountants. A life-long member of Shady Grove Untied Methodist Church, she served on the Church Council and various committees throughout the years and until recently was the secretary and treasurer of the E.D. Hooker Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her husband, Gordon R. Hipp; son and daughter-in-law, Bret H. and Joyce Boland Hipp and granddaughter, Pressley McClain Hipp, all of Irmo; sisters, Mrs. Felder (Margaret) Bauknight, Mrs. Jim (Aldaray) McAndrews, Mrs. Dodson (Runette) Still, Mrs. Marconi (Elizabeth) Shealy, Mrs. James (Miriam) Monts, Mrs. E.D. (Jofreida) Hooker and Mrs. Clinton (Wanda) Allen, all of Irmo, Mrs. Waldo (Olive) Chapman of Little Mountain, Mrs. Bobby (Connie) Bickley of Chapin; brothers, P.K. Derrick of Irmo and Vernon W. Thelma Hicks

IRMO - Services for Thelma Folk Hicks, 81, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2004 at Shady Grove United Methodist Church. Burial to follow in church cemetery. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2004 at Caughman- Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Shady Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Hicks, widow of Colie E. Hicks, died Wednesday, October 27, 2004. Born in Irmo, she was the daughter of the late David and Mattie Rister Folk. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughters; Margaret F. Free of Irmo, Virginia F. Duncan of Batesburg-Leesville; sons, James F. and Lonnie D. Hicks of Irmo; brother, Charlie D. Folk of Irmo; sister, Julia M. Died, near New Brunswick, N.J., on the 12th inst. Catherine Hammond, wife of L. A. Austin, and daughter of the late Dr. A. Fitch, of Columbia, S.C. (Charleston Mercury November 19, 1858)

Wilbur Rhett Gantt

W.R. Gantt, 92; Dies at Home --- Wilbur Rhett Gantt, 92, of 3100 Clark Street died at his home at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon after an illness of three weeks.  Mr. Gantt was born in Aiken County on November 22, l863.  He was the oldest male member of Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbia.  Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lizzie Gantt; two daughters, Mrs. Daisy Graddick and Mrs. Lillie Dawkins; four sons, L. R. Gantt, A. C. Gantt, H. B. Gantt and W. R. Gantt; a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock this afternoon from the Paschal Funeral Home, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. A. Kenneth Hewitt.  Entombment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery at Newberry.  Active pallbearers will be:  Joe S. Lowman, C. A. Jacobs, O. T. Amick, J. Grady Paschal, E. M. Younginer and W. W. Davis. The Columbia Record, December 19, 1960 Mrs Gantt's Rites Are Held --- Funeral services for Mrs. W. R. Gantt, l2l7 Harvey St., were to be held this afternoon from Paschal Funeral Home by the Rev. A. K. Hewitt with interment in Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry.  She died Sunday at her home after several years illness.  She was born November 20, l877 in Newberry County and was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church.  Surviving are three sons, L. R. Gantt of Greenville, A. C. Gantt and H. B. Gantt, both of Columbia; three granddaughters, Mrs. E. M. Younginer, Mrs. L. M. Mann, Mrs. A. W. Hatcher, all of Columbia; and six great-grandchildren.  Pallbearers were to be E. M. Younginer, Jr., L. M. Mann, A. W. Hatcher, T. D. Hoyt, E. L. Huffman and O.T. Amick. Alexander B. Hendrix
Died..February 20th, in Columbia, Mr. Alexander B. Hendrix, aged 30 years and 10 months. (Charleston Mercury, 3-1-1859)

Eunice Hagins
Mrs. Eunice Harris Young Hagins, 76, of Christopher Towers, Columbia, widow of Dewey Hagins, died Monday at a Sumter hospital.  Born in Lancaster County she was a daughter of the late W. J. and Molly Harris Young. She was a member of College Place United Methodist Church.  Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Paul J. Quattlebaum of Columbia, Mrs. C. T. Howe of Hamlet, N.C., and Mrs. W. N. Sharpe of Sumter; a son, William D. Hagins of Irmo; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Bouknight and Mrs. Martha Sligh of Columbia and Mrs. Myrtle Dowdle of Lancaster; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Plans will be announced by Talbert-Shives Funeral Home.  The family suggests that those who wish may make memorials to the Cancer Society...The State on February 14, 1978, contributed by Andrew Staton
