Mrs. George Massey
Unexpected Death of Richland Woman, Mrs. George Massey Died Suddenly at Her Home on Winnsboro Road 
Funeral Services Today

Mrs. George Massey died Saturday afternoon at her residence on the Winnsboro road, abut six miles from Columbia.  Mrs. Massey had been ill for some time but recently had been improved in health.  At 4:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, feeling unwell, she sent for a neighbor.  When the neighbor arrived she found that Mrs. Massey had fallen over in her chair.  Mrs. Massey died a few minutes later.  Before her marriage Mrs. Massey was Miss Cloer of Statesville, N.C.  She is survived by her husband.  She was 38 years of age.  The funeral of Mrs. Massey will be held at 11 o'clock this morning at Mt. Pleasant church.  The services will be conducted by the Rev. Mr. Inabinet. [The State - Dec. 7, 1914) ... SC #1 

Martin Rites
Elgin - Services for Mrs. Whit T. Martin will be 4 p.m. today in Spears Creek Baptist Church, Pontiac, conducted by the Rev. Arline Kirkland and the Rev. Avery Brownlow. Mrs. Martin died August 4, 1974.  Pallbearers will be Albert Miles, Joe Goings, Roy Elkins, Billy Young, Roy Coley and Wilfred Goff.  Mrs. Martin, 70, the former Ollie Beatrice Higgins, died at her home.  Thompson's Funeral Home is in charge. Ainsley Monteith Dies in County

Venerable Columbian Succumbs Near Lykesland

Ainsley H. Monteith, 81 years of age, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. C. Chappell, on the Bluff road, near Lykesland, at 2:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Monteith was born in Columbia March 26, 1840, and was twice married, his first wife being Miss Katherine Trexevant Yates of Richland county. Of this marriage survive Mrs. L. C. Chappell of Richland county, Mrs. Belle R. Rouquie of Columbia, Miss Emily Monteith and Mrs. d. S. Yates of Ninety-Six and Galloway Monteith of Columbia.

Mr. Monteith was married a second time in 1884 to Miss Emma Means of Abbeville, who survives him. Mr. Monteith was well known and admired in Columbia where he was a member of Camp Hampton, U.C.V. Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at Elmwood cemetery.

The pallbearers will be: D. Y. Monteith, Albert Miller, Stephen Rouquie, T. D. Murtiashaw, J. B. Yates and Philip Chappell. (The State September 30, 1921)

Cordora M. Martin
Retired Planter at English Dies While Visiting Daughter Near City

Cordora M. Martin, 71, retired planter at English, died very suddenly at 1 o'clock yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. J. Turnipseed, on the Monticello Road, while on a visit. He resided with his son, T. M. Martin, 3118 Fifth Avenue.

He was a son of William Martin and Elizabeth Cobb and was highly respected wherever he was known, making many friends by his sterling characteristics. He was a member of Salem Methodist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. C. J. Turnipseed of Bookman and Mrs. C. B. Van Horton of Columbia; also by four sons, Theodore M. Martin of Columbia; Fletcher R. Martin of English; E. F. Martin of Columbia; and Alex M. Martin of English; also by a sister, Mrs. I. E. Gardner of Columbia; also two brothers, Edward Martin of Columbia and H. A. Martin of Lugoff.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at Salem Church, 16 miles from Columbia on the Camden road (Ft. Jackson, Old Salem Methodist Church). 

Interment will take place in the churchyard. (The State, Columbia, South Carolina - March 22, 1927)

Mrs. Ossie Martin Dies at Hospital
Funeral Services to be Held at Salem Church Tomorrow Morning

Mrs. Ossie Martin, whose home was in Richland County about 26 miles east of Columbia, died at 11:35 o'clock last night at the Columbia Hospital after a long illness. For three weeks she had been in a serious condition.

Plans made early this morning fix the hour for the funeral at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning at Salem Church (Ft. Jackson).
Mrs. Martin, the wife of Cordora A. Martin, was a lifelong resident of Richland County.  Before marriage she was Miss Ossie Miles.  She was a faithful member of the Baptist Church, a woman of lovely Christian character.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one brother, W. J. Miles of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and the following children: Frank Martin of Lugoff, Theodore McC. Martin of Columbia, and Mrs. Ethel Turnipseed, Miss Florrie Martin, Alex Martin and Fletcher R. Martin, all of Richland County.

Mrs. Martin was 62 years of age.  She had a wide circle of friends in Richland County who join with the family in mourning her death. (The State, Columbia, South Carolina - July 29, 1922)

Sad Death of Bride

Mrs. Lula Martin, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Martin of Blaney and wife of Mr. Jesse A. Martin of 1826 Taylor Street, this city, died Sunday morning at the home of her husband after a brief illness. She was married only six weeks before her death, which makes it all the more sad.  The interment took place Monday at Salem Methodist Church (Ft. Jackson) and the funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Mr. Barnes. There was a large gathering of friends and relatives to pay their tribute of respect and the occasion was one of unusual sadness.  (The State, Columbia, South Carolina - Jan. 1, 1908)

Mrs. Margaret Martin Dies in Ninety-Seventh Year

Mrs. Margaret Martin, 96, died at 9:15 last night (October 9, 1928 ) at her residence in the Pinehurst section, on the Old Camden Road. Mrs. Martin was the widow of the late Rev. Phillip Martin, the mother of 12 children.  She is also survived by 108 grandchildren and 129 grandchildren.

She celebrated her 96th birthday September 30, and thus 96 years and 17 days old.

Mrs. Martin was a lifelong resident of Richland Count and was highly respected and beloved in her community, having a host of friends throughout the county.  In spite of her great age, she retained her interest in the things about her until the very last, retaining her mental faculties until within 15 minutes of her death.

She was a member of Enon Methodist Church (Ft. Jackson) for 80 years.

Funeral services will be conducted by her pastor, the Rev. J. L. Miller, at Enon Methodist Church on the Percival Road, about 12 miles from Columbia, at 4 o'clock this afternoon.  The funeral party will leave the residence about 3 o'clock.  Interment will take place in the church yard.

James McClellan

Howard C. Martin
Howard C. Martin, 74, of Blythewood died Wednesday (August 25, 1982) at
Manor Care of Lexington Nursing Center.

Born in Blythewood, he was the son of the late Walter Glenn and Lishie Rimer Martin. He was a member of Sandy Level Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Med's Sunday School Class. Mr. Martin was retired from the lumber business.

Surviving are three nieces: Mrs. H. V. (Louise) Paschal of Columbia; Mrs. J. W. (Dorothy) Blume of Blythewood and Mrs. Buster (Doris) Young of Winnsboro.  Plans will be announced by Talbert-Shives Funeral Home.

Katherine Fetner Miller
COLUMBIA - Service for Katherine Fetner Miller, 86, will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 11:30-1 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Miller died Saturday, July 14, 2007. Born in Florence, she was a daughter of the late William Angus Fetner and Gertrude Koopman Fetner. She graduated from Florence High School in 1938 and Florence Business College in 1939. She was employed by the University of South Carolina for 20 years, retiring in 1984. She was a volunteer with Providence Hospital and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Miller had been a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church since 1966 where she was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, participated in Live Wire, and was a member of the Martha Circle and various other committees.

Surviving are her son, William T. ³Buddy² Bateman and his wife, Ellen, of Columbia; daughters, Candace Brunell and her husband, Roger, of Conyers, Ga., and Rebecca Kirby and her husband, Charles, of Irmo, S.C.; grandchildren, Ron Barron of Conyers, Ga., Crystal Maddox and her husband, Chris, of Loganville, Ga., Katherine Kirby of Columbia and James Bateman of Columbia. She was predeceased by brother and sisters, William Angus Fetner Jr., Mary Fetner McPherson and Elizabeth Fetner Brown.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Leland McElveen and the staff at the South Carolina Oncology Associates, PA, Susan Uehling and Jill Pingel of Palmetto Health Hospice and the staff of Wildewood Downs.

Jacob Owens
IRMO - A memorial service for Jacob H. Owens, 24, will be held at three o'clock, Sunday, October 17, 2004, in Shady Grove United Methodist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Officiating will be The Reverend Kathryn Hunter. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the family life center and other times at 104 Sutton Way, Irmo. Memorials may be made to Shady Grove UMC, Building Fund or Choir Robe Fund, 1918 Shady Grove Road, Irmo, SC 29063 or to SC Spinal Cord Injury Association, 2009 Hampton Street, Suite A, Columbia, SC 29204.

Jacob died Thursday, October 14, 2004. Born in Bamberg, SC, he is the son of Joseph N. Owens and Stella Meek Owens. Jacob lived in Germany with his parents until age six when they returned to Bamberg where he attended local schools.

Survivors include his mother, Stella of Irmo; father, Joe and his wife Linda of Savannah, GA; a sister, Megan Owens and her son Tristan of Irmo; aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn A. Strickland and their daughters Devin and Denver of Irmo; paternal grandfather, Harry E. Owens and his wife, Dot of Savannah; Jacob's fiancee, Jennifer Beauchamp of Sumter. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Vera Dell Holland Owens and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jean B. Meek. Shives Funeral Home. W. P. McCully
Died..February 21st, in Columbia, Mr. W. P. McCully, eldest son of Mr. John and Mrs. Eliza McCully, of Columbia, in the 24th year

Minnie Matthews
Mrs. Minnie McKenzie Matthews, 89, of 1108 Oakland Ave. died Thursday.  Born in Andrews Conty, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Emory and Mrs. Lydia Jane Newberry McKenzie.  Surviving are sons, Billy J. and Bobby A. Matthews, both of Columbia; sisters, Mrs. Suley Cloyd, Mrs. Lena Broome and Mrs. Jackie Harper, all of Columbia; and brothers, Ernest McKenzie of Myrtle Beach and Joseph McKenzie of Savannah.  Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elmwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia.

Mrs. Julia Monts
Ballentine, Feb. 24 -  Mrs. Julia Monts in her 85th year died yesterday evening of pneumonia.  aunt "July," as she was known and called by every one known to her, was born and reared and lived near Hilton.  She has been a widow for 50 years; her husband, Nelson Monts, died in the Confederat army enar the close of the War Between the Sections.  She was the mother of four sons and one daughter: W. D. Monts, who died about a year ago and Jacob Monts, dead 30 years.  Those living are U. C. Monts and S. M. Monts of Chapin and Mrs. Mary Smith of Lexington.  "Aunt July" was known and appreciated for her permanent and sound position on matters of local interest.  She was all her life a faithful member of Old Bethel (High Hill) Lutheran church, where her remains will be buried tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock.  She lived through and experienced many changes in the history of her community and always took and acted with keen interest and intelligence a prominent part in such matters up to the time of her last illness.
