Miss Stella Lancaster of Denmark is the guest of Miss Annie Teague. Miss Evelyn Williams whose home is in North Augusta visits friends in Columbia. Miss Agnes McMaster goes to Good Will Plantation for a few days after summer school for teachers in Vineland, N.J. Superintendent of Rose Hill School, E.B. Wallace, has returned from Chicago where he attended the summer schools, studying the school systems of that section of the United States. Mrs. Walter B. Cormack and Miss Marie Cormack at home in Columbia after North Carolina trip. Misses Eva Kneece and Eunice Kneece of Leesville visit relatives in Columbia. O.W. McMillan of the Mountain City Milling Company on business in Columbia. Dr. and Mrs. W.T. Derieux home in Columbia from vacation. A sumptious surprise birthday celebration was presented to Miss Gertrude Hatchel last Tuesday evening by her mother Mrs. C. O. Lucas of College Place. Invitees were Misses Edith Flowers, Annie Shoaf, Margaret Pendleton, Ruth Hammond, Louise Easterling, Daphney Maie Thornhill, Mattie Lou Oxnel, and Lucile Johnson; DeWitt Brown, Carroll Addy, H.D. Ivey, Jr, Tom Crenshaw, Charlie Monteith Douglas and Truss Easterling, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Easterling, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Sineath and Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Sineath. Returns Home. Mrs. Claude C. Gregory returns home to Winder, Ga. after visit with her sister, Mrs. G. B. Brooks, on Wayne Street and relatives in Newberry, Lexington, and Union counties. Back From Michigan. Miss Geirgie Norris spent summer in Y.W.C.A. work on the Great Lakes. She is home for a short while before she goes to Virginia State Normal College to teach in the department of education. To Resume Work in City Schools. After spending the summer in New York in special study at Columbia University, Miss Louise Norris returns to Columbia to resuem her work in the city schools. Concert Organist Returns. Lynwood Williamson, organist of the First Baptist Church and Rivoli Theater, returns to the city after spending some time in eastern North Carolina and Virginia. Farewell Party. Miss Maty Winn entertained about 50 children and teachers of the primary department of the College Place Methodist Sunday School with a lawn party at her home Wednesday afternoon. Miss Winn leaves Monday for Kansas City, Mo. to attend Scarritt Bible and Training school. Sunshine Circle Meets. The Sunshine Circle of King's Daughters will meet tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock with Mrs. W. U. Abell at her home on Bull Street. Girls to Make Money. The Bethlehem Circle of the King's Daughters met with Miss Myrtle Leach at her home on Elmwood Avenue Wednesday to plan a fund raiser for their good works program. The mother of the hostess, Mrs. J. O. Leach and Mrs T. O. Byrd served refreshments. Postponement of Club Meeting. The first fall meeting of the Business and Professional Women's Club has been postponed until October. Missionery Circle Meets. Circle No. 1 of the Main Street Methodist Church meets Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock with Mrs. H. K. Cook at 830 Elmwood Avenue with assistant hostesses Mrs. S. L. Honey, Mrs. C. M. Cook, and Mrs. L. N. Drake. To Entertain Children. Next Saturday afternoon Mrs Florence Hunter will entertain at the Old Hampton Place the newly organized Alice Earle Children's Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The 20 children will meet promptly at 4:30 oÕclock at 1412 Hampton Street. Birthday Party. Mrs. S. E. Maxwell of Laurens Street lavishly entertained her little daughter, Nancy Sue to celebrate her birthday. Those assisting were Mrs. Flavio Cooper, Mrs. J. H. Wilson, Mrs. W. L. Blackwell, Mrs. Frank Brennecke, Mrs. J. R. Turner, Mrs. Harry Hair, and Mrs. E. M. Shepard. The little guests included Mildred and Mary Lane, Wilson Frances, Wilfred and Margaret Ruth Blackwell, Sara and C. M. Graham, Martha Shepard, Annie Lee and Bedford Moore, Elizabeth and Johnny Wheeler, Vivian Tompkins, Myrtle and Harrison Hair, Floiria and Charlie Boatick, Nancy and Roderick Turner, Nellia Cooper, Dorothy and Gertrude Clark, Harriet, Julia, and Bill Lowery. Leave for Future Home Mrs. Doss and her small son, Jack, visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs E.L. Mobley. Maj. and Mrs J. V. Doss and family will leave their home in Wilson, Okla., to make their future home in Des Moines, Iowa. Miss Frances Mobley, sister of Mrs. Doss will travel with them and visit for a while. Mr. and Mrs. John Seibels, Miss Maty Ross Seibels and Calder Seibels returned Wednesday from White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. Hospitalized last week. Mrs. W. F. Sharpe, 2223 Main Street, is recovering from surgery at Columbia Hospital. At Children's Clinic. The clinic has been updated by the city. Nurse Miss Rose Herbert of the clinic states that on Monday a free kindergarten is to open in the clinic playroom under the supervision of the city schools. The public is invited to the regular quarterly meeting of the ChildrenÕs Clinic Association next Friday at 5 P. M. Leave for Mountains. Dr. and Mrs. C. L. Kibler and Dr. and Mrs. S. B. Fishburne vacation at Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Miss Ruff Returns. Miss Stella M. Ruff has returned to the city. Visitors at Mack Home. Mrs. J. B. Mack of Saluda and Mrs. I. D. Rushton of Johnston visit Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Mack Returns from Vacation. Miss Margaret Lewis is home from visits with siblings Mrs. W. L. Bryan of Myrtle Beach, and E. B. Lewis in Greenville. Return to Greenville. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Lewis of Greenville visit parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Lewis. Returns from Vacation. E. T. Carroll and J. L. Simon have returned to Columbia after vacationing in Augusta and other points. Visiting in Orangeburg. Mrs. A. A. Gerald, accompanied by her sons, Avery, Joe, and George are visiting relatives and friends in Orangeburg. Misses Crosland Entertained. Misses Marie and Junie Crosland were entertained at the home of Mrs. T. J. Elkins in North Columbia Friday night. Visiting Parents Here. Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Brown of Preston visit parents Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Ford on Gregg Street. Visitor From Marion. Mrs. Anna Cloyd of Marion visits relatives in the city. For Mr. Rikard. Miss Myrtle Leach was hostess at party in honor of Arthur Rikard who was visiting his aunt, Mrs. Laurence Bruzelle, at her home on Elmwood Avenue Friday night. Misses Dorothy and Ethel Gilham entertained with solos. Other guests were Sara Sanders, Myrtle Cox, Elberta Brazelle, Walter Ingram, Pope Scurry, F. S. Scurrs, J. H. White, and Albert Vanneison. Home From Trip to Mountains. Miss Celia Morris is at home again after an extended visit to the mountains of North Carolina. Mrs. Keaton Named. The Womans Missionary Society of Columbia District, Upper South Carolina Conference, held its annual meeting at Waverly Methodist Church last week and appointed Mrs. R. L. Keaton who is the superintendent of social service of the Upper South Carolina Conference, to represent the movement inaugurated by the Columbia Interdenominational Woman's Missionary union for the improvement of the living conditions of women confined in the state penitentiary. For Mrs. Harrison. Mrs. George E. Crout gave a party at her home on Divine Street in honor of her newly married sister, Mrs. Edwin T. Harrison of Trenton formerly Miss Beatrice Knight of Columbia. There were 34 guests including Miss Novice Kibler. Good League Program The Epworth League of Main Street Methodist will hold ____? service that has been arranged. Those involved are Miss Leila Drake, Jerome Wilson, P. O. Simmons, and Carlisle Smith. There will also be special music. Here From Newberry. Mrs. N. T. Hogge of Newberry visits her daughter, Mrs. N. G. Gruber at 1318 University Place. Music Folk Here. Josef Burgard, Miss sara Kennedy and Mrs Margaret Holder arrived in columbia yeaterday to assume their new work at Chicora. Mr. Burgard and Miss Kennedy are pianoists, the former a pupil of Philipp of the Paris conservatoire, the latter a pupil of Arthur Friedheim, the celebrated Liszt pupil who is now teaching in New York. Mrs. Holder will teach theoretical wok exclusively at the college this winter. She is a graduate of the New England conservatory and a private pupil of George W. Chadwick. Other members of the music faculty are the same as last year. Miss Melissa Warlick, who has specialized on work with children with Mrs. Crosby Adams, the greatest child specialist in the piano world will teach only very houng pupils this year. Miss Boyd heads the violin department and D. A. Psressley the organ. Miss Lenore Purcell and Miss Sara Baggott will assist Mrs. Bellamann in the voice department and Dr. Bellamann will combine his time together to advanced and talented piano pupils. Dr. Bellamann considers this the strongest music faculty the college has ever had. the department, as usual, is already heavily booked in advance of registration. To Attend Virginia State Normal. Miss Kathleen Morgan leaves Monday for Virginia where she will enter the State Normal College. She will be accompanied by her mother, Mrs. T. M. Morgan. Woman's Auxilliary to Meet. The Woman's Auxiliary of the Columbia Tpographical Union, No. 34, will meet Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock with Mrs. J. E. Sligh at her home 2214 Gadsden Street. Back From Charleston. Mrs. LeRoy M. Salvo has returned from a summer's vacation spent in Charleston. |
