by Death Spartan Native Passes at Post in Olathe, Kan.;
Rites Incomplete Lieutenant James Edward Vernon, 49, of the
civil engineering corps, USNR, died suddenly at his post at
Olathe, Kan., yesterday morning. A native of Spartanburg,
Lieutenant Vernon was the son of the late Dr. Thomas W. Vernon
and the late Mrs. Mamie Dillard Vernon of
Spartanburg. Surviving are three children, Mary Elizabeth
Vernon, Mrs. William R. Hendrix, Jr., and Aviation Cadet
Thomas E. Vernon of the US Navy Air Station at Pensacola,
Fla. Lieutenant Vernon was educated at COLUMBIA. HE
WAS A GRADUATE OF Clemson and received his BS degree in civil
engineering in the class of 1918. He served as a first
lieutenant in World War No. 1 as a member of the air
forces. He was connected with the engineering firm of
Harwood Beebe and the reforestation service before entering
the service in 1943. Funeral arrangements will be
