The Will of SAMUEL WOODRUFF, husband of NANCY PILGRIM WOODRUFF

The above children were from his first marriage to Jennette/Jennet Woodruff. His will states the following re: these children.

'My will is that the above named children. vix. Hannah, Phebe, Joseph, & Moses shall have the sums above named to them and no more of my estste. The remainer of my Estate after the above legacies are paid out to be equally divided between my desc following named children in proportion w/what they have already received as follows:

Wiley Drayton O'Shields

The Last Will  and Testament of Wiley Drayton O'Shields. South Carolina  Spartanburg County] I'  W.D.  O'Shields of Spartanburg county a farmer do make this my last will. I give devise and bequeath my estate and property real and personal as follows' that is to say. 1st I give devise and bequeath to my beloved wife Julia O'Shields. The plantation whereupon I now live containing two hundred and seventy two acres more or less. Together with all the farming tools' the North Carolina wagon and harness' the steam engin and cotton gin and all its necessary fixtures. Also the two mules' bill and jerry and the black horse Charly' also the stock of cattle and hogs and all other stock that is upon  the above named premeises necessary for the comfort of my wife Julia O'Shields. I appoint Julia O'Shields my wife and J.M. O'Shields my son Executors of this my will. In witness whereof I have signed and sealed and publisted and declared this  instrument as my will at home upon the sixth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight Hundred and seventy eight. W.D.his x mark O'Shields [seal] That W.D. O'Shields at home on the sixth day of September signed and sealed this instrument and published and declared the same asand for his last will and we at his request and in his presents and in the presents and in the presentsof each have hereunto written our names as subscribing witness. In the Name of God Amen

I Joseph Wofford of the same State & District being of sound and disposing mind and Memory and being mind full of the uncertainty of life do make publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament.

Item 1st I desire that my body be decently intered and suitable gravestone put up,

Item 2nd I authorize my executors herein after named to pay all my debts if I should owe any also to have a wall put up of stone fifty feet square enclosing my grave and the grave of my departed companion.

Item 3 I give to my wife Eleanor that portion of my land that Thomas Knighton now lives on say commencing forty or fifty yards S.E OF THE HOUSE ON Jones line thence to a knob in the field thence to an old R.O corner thence to a R.O.TW. Trecers Corner all that land that I own West of Sd, line supposed to contain somewhere between Thirty and Forty acres, one Horse and saddle also mule buggy and harness one cow and calf one sow and pigs also her bed and furniture of all kind whatsoever that she brought to my house absolutely as her own right and property in lieu of all dower or claims of dower.

Item 4- I give devise and bequeath to my daughter Martha wife of Wm, Bennett my negro girl Louisa & the heirs of her body her increase

Item 5 -I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah wife of John Langford three hundred dollars.

Item 6- I give to my daughter Nancy wife of Willis Layton and the heirs of her body Melissa and her increase.

Item 7 -I give to the children of my Daughter Rebecca Layton deceased to Mary and her increase

Item 8- I give and devise and bequeath to my son Joseph L Wofford twenty five acres of land including the house that I now live in and the out buildings also two hundred dollars I have heretofore given to him a negro boy Zack which I hereby affirm his right.

Item 9- I have heretofore given to my daughter Jane wife of Isaac Epting and the heirs of her body a negro girl Eliza which I hereby affirm as their right.

Item 10- I have heretofore given my son Jeremiah Wofford a negro boy Ande which I hereby affirm as his right.

Item 11- I have heretofore given to my son Benjamin Wofford a negro girl named Lucy which sd girl and her increase I affirm as his right.

Item 12- My desire that the rest of my negros be appraised and my sons to have the liberty to take them at sd valuation if they shall elect and can agree to do so as I do not want them exposed to sale but my desire is that they remain with my sons.

Item 13-- I authorize and require my executors to collect all the debts that may be due me and to sell all the rest and residue of my property both real and personal

( heretofore specifically divided) of whatsoever name or mind and the proceeds to be equally devided between all my children share and share a like among them namely Harvy Wofford

Item 15- I give to my grandson H.W Bennett my riding horse and saddle and bridle.

Item 16-- I nominate Constitute and appoint my sons

Harvey Wofford & Jeremiah Wofford my executors

Witness my hand and seal this 19th January one thousand eight hundred and fifty six , affirmed sealed and acknowledge in the presents of us who in the presents of each other witnessed the due execution thereof Joseph Wofford (seal)

Christopher Rhodes

In the name of God Amen I Christopher Rhodes same of Spartanburg District, being at this time weak in body but of sound mind and memory, do make this acknowledge this to be my last will and testament in witness where of I have here unto set my hand and seal,--- first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, My body to the earth to be buried in a Christain like manner. And touching such worldly goods and estate as it has pleased God to bless me with . I dispose of it in the following manner.

1st that my just debts be paid out of my personal estate ,

2ndly I gave and bequeath the tract of land where on I now live after the death of my wife to my son Thomas Rhodes ,that is to say all the land that I own on the South west side of the road running from Isaac Crow to head ford--thereby I desire that the balance of my property of every kind be and remain in the possesion of my wife for her to live on during her life time . And at her death to be divided into nine equal parts or as near to as can be , And that my son Christopher Rhodes, Benjamin , William and Thomas Rhodes . My daughters Elizabeth Grizel Nancy Hendrix ,Judith Barker Hannah Stroud an Rachel Waldrup do recieve an equal portion of said property . I desire that my son Christopher Rhodes Benjamin and William Rhodes --devide the said property and that in case there should be any disagreement with regard to the choice of lots that they cast lots for the right of choice,

I signed ,sealed and Acknowledged this Fifteenth day of March in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred and six.--1806

Christopher Rhodes Sr ,born Nov 25 ,1730-death Jan 1813 he married Judith Couch born 1764 in Orange County N.C.  (History of Walnut Grove Methodist Church )

Rachel Rhodes born 1790 was the daughter of Christopher Rhodes and Judith Couch, Rachel married Shadrack Waldrup born 1799.

NOTE:  In the will of John Grizel-- he names his daughter Nancy and Wife Elizabeth Grizel .  So it looks like Eilzabeth was Rhodes before marriage...transcribed and contributed by Patrick O'Shields, July 2010

Spartanburg District---Know all men by these presents. That I William Rhodes senior of the District of Spartanburg and State aforesaid; being of sound and disposing mind do make this my last Will and Testament, first I give my soul to God who gave it, And my body to the dust from whence it came.

It is my Will and pleasure that all my just debts and funeral expences be paid by my executors out of the first money collected by him belonging to my estate, I give my son William H Rhodes and of which he has in his possession ,One bed and furniture, one Cow and Calf and all that tract and parcel land lying on Enoree River including the house where I now live, And separated from the balance of my home tract, by E-Line which I have employed Mr I,F Park surveyor, to run and mark commencing on the old couch line at the branch, on rock corner .running South 80 E15.75 to Red oak X 3 .thence South 60 E.7.50 to ash X3 thence south 10 E 5.50 to Spring , thence South 48.E. 12.75 to red oak x3 On John Rhodes line I give to my son John F Rhodes the other portion of my home tract of land lying out on the road Leading to Hiram Yarbour will and separated from the land I have given to my son William H Rhodes by the lines above stated, I also give to my son John F Rhodes two hundred dollars which I think will make his portion of land equal value with the Land I have given my son William H Rhodes . I also give to my son ,John F Rhodes a black Canadneen Colt, and desire him to take possession of it and brake and train it, I also give to him A ,bed and furniture and a Cow and Calf ,

I give to my daughter Permelia F Rampley . Five hundred dollars for her use and benefit during her Life, and at her death to her child or children.

I give to my daughter Matilda J Rampley six hundred dollars, for her use and benefit during her life, And at her death to her child or children, [ One hundred dollars of that amount I give her for her attention on her mother during her last illiness.] which I put their father in Possession during his life for their use and benefit during their life.

I also give to them jointly One hundred dollars ,It is my will that the balance of my Estate on a credit of twelve months with interest, and equally divided between William H Rhodes, John F Rhodes , Permelia Rampley , Matilda I Rampley and the two daughters of my son Wofford Rhodes deceased.to wit\ Tomesia Rhodes and Arabella Rhodes I give to them for their use and benefit during their life . And at their death to their child or children . A child or children of a deceased child taking the part of it father if intitled to if living .----------

I hereby constitute and appoint my son William H Rhodes my executor

In witness of I hereby assign my name and affix there unto my seal
