Black River Swamp Cemetery
Sumter County, SC
Contributed by Anita Martin-Schwartz

Located near the Black River. From Sumter, take Hwy 378 east toward I-95. Approaching the swamp and after crossing the third bridge the cemetery is on a hill in the woods on right. It is after third bridge and before first median-crossing. Last surveyed Feb 2009 by Anita Schwartz.

This cemetery has been planted w/ground palms, daffodils & white bells among others. I believe many of the stones have fallen & are covered w/understory debris; It is very overgrown and in need of attention. I will volunteer my time to help any descendants interested in an effort to restore and preserve this cemetery. -Anita

Type-African American-GPS; N 33 56.214  W 80 09.426
From Bishopville, travel Hwy. 527 SE until you cross into Sumter County. Continue on 527 to 378; turn right onto 378 and travel 1.1 miles. Cemetery is located  on a high bluff near Black River swamp. The bluff is on the southeastern side of the northbound lane of 378. (should read South side of the Eastbound lane).
This appears to be a family/community church cemetery. There are visible signs of other burial plots, but markers at these sites were not visible during spring 2001, survey by Dorothy Tedder Smith and husband Thomas Bruce Smith II. Ray Watts directed survey team to cemetery.
