Soldier Obituaries
Herald, The (Rock Hill, SC) - December 20, 2004 The Rock Hill soldier killed in a helicopter crash in
Iraq earlier this month will be laid to rest today. A burial service with full military honors for Chief
Warrant Officer Patrick Leach will be 2 p.m. at Laurelwood Cemetery.
Leach was killed in Mosul, Iraq, on Dec. 9. Leach, 39, was a member of the U.S. Army National
Guard and a veteran helicopter pilot of the first Gulf War. He was
deployed in October and was a member of A Company, First Battalion,
151st Aviation Regiment. Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, which will be
conducting the funeral, has received numerous phone calls from
offices around the state, said Susan Greene Fischer, funeral home
manager. Fischer said some of those who may attend include Gov.
Mark Sanford or Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, Rock Hill Mayor Doug Echols
and City Manager Carey Smith. The type of service Fischer said Leach will receive
includes a detail of pall-bearers made up of soldiers; presentation
of the flag to his wife, Elizabeth, and his parents; a missing-man
formation with the Apache helicopters; a 21-gun salute; and the
playing of "Taps." Fort Jackson, an Army base in Columbia, will
provide soldiers for the services, Fischer said. The missing-man formation involves three helicopters
flying to demonstrate one is no longer there, said Lt. Col. Chris
Jaques. Depending upon today's weather, the missing-man formation
may be canceled. Jaques said he spoke to family members Sunday and they
were "holding up" and "as well as can be expected." The Rev. Barry Dagenhart of First ARP Church will
officiate. Visitation will be after the service at the home, 861
Eden Terrace. Two funds have been set up for Leach's five children -
one in Rock Hill and one by the Airline Pilots Association. To
donate, write to Carolina First Bank, attention Eddie Brown or Toni
Helms, P.O. Box 12037, Rock Hill, SC 29731; or Pilot Relief Fund,
Airline Pilots Association, 435 N. 44th St., Gateway 2, Suite 340,
Phoenix, AZ 85008. A memorial service for Staff Sgt. Paul Neff, killed
when his Black Hawk helicopter was downed Nov. 7 in Iraq, will be at
10 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, 30900 Six
Mile, Livonia. Friends may call at the church for 30 minutes before
the service. They may also call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the
Vermeulen Funeral Home, 46401 Ann Arbor Road, Plymouth. Burial will be in Parkview Memorial Cemetery,
Livonia. Back to York County, South Carolina Genealogy Trails
