Illinois School was opened in the fall of 1882, and served all grades.  Four years later, after Utah School opened, Illinois School became the High School.  It was located on Illinois ave. 4th St.  An annex was added in 1886.  In 1904, a new high school was built and Illinois School became a grade school.

Initially Illinois School served as an "all-grade" school, until 1886 when it became the first official high school.  In 1904, a new high school building was constructed at 4th St. and Iowa ave. (left), and in 1914, the building on the right was constructed south of the Illinois School; this building became a junior and senior high.  In 1967 a new high school was built on 18th Street and Arizona ave. SW. , and the previous building was used as a junior high/middle school.
