Some facts from "A Place-Name Study of Beadle County, South Dakota" by Leta May James, 1939
CAVOUR
Cavour was named for Count Cavour, Italian Statesman, who when a young man traveled in and explored Dakota he had a camp near the present site of Cavour. The first store at Cavour was that of Mixter and Hackett. N. C. Estey had the first drug supply. W. B. Sickles operated the first saloon. Real estate dealers were Sweetzer, Sage and Sweeney. It was the first town between Volga and Ft. Pierre and saw a great rush in the beginning of the homestead days. Men gladly paid to be allowed to sleep on the floor of the Cavour House. They'd give anything to get indoors. [source unknown]
